Meet Layla!
She's a beautiful and sweet 4-year-old purebred Chocolate Lab, ready to settle down with a good solid home. She's an active girl who'll be a great junior assistant as well as a good hiking and swimming buddy.
There has never been a sweeter, more loving girl than Layla. Like chocolate, she melts into you and connects with your heart.
Layla was abandoned in a foreclosed house two years ago and left to die. The realtor selling the house found her, and a family adopted her. That family then had a baby and relegated Layla to an outdoor pen. After two years they decided that was too much work (and she was anxious all the time) so they surrendered her to a shelter.
Layla does have severe separation anxiety, and will need adopters who can be with her ALL day - as in 24/7. There are amazing separation anxiety programs you can work with to start to leave her alone once she is settled (think 1 - 5 seconds) and work up to a few hours a day; but this is a very methodical program and takes a lot of commitment and consistency on the part of her human.
Layla's been through a lot lately, and we're proud to say some very kind and persevering SDR volunteers saved her from the shelter and brought her here to Boulder. She's decompressing and we are only starting to consider accepting applications for this incredibly wonderful dog.
She's good in the car alone when her foster dad runs a quick errand at 8500 feet above sea level, when it's cool enough to leave her for 15 minutes in the car with windows down.
Layla is good with cats, kids and other dogs. She actually adores kids but we'd be very cautious to adopt her to a family, because families go places without their dogs (think Waterworld, trips, school events, museums).
Layla would most likely be an exceptional PTSD service dog for the right person. She loves training and is calm and neutral in most settings once she knows she's safe and with her trusted person.
