My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

EmmyLou is a courtesy listing, she is not part of the East CAN program. Adoption will be directly from the current owners.

"Two months ago we took in a sweet abandoned female dog that a coworker found on the side of the road. We took her to the vet for a full check up and lab work. She’s completely healthy, spayed, and was given all her vaccinations. Through her chip, the original owners were contacted by the vet. They didn’t want her back but didn’t say why. They had given her to a friend, who was also contacted. He was the one who dumped her & also didn’t want her back - again no reason why.

When the chip registration was transferred over to us, we learned she turns 10 in December - we could’ve sworn she was 5 or 6. So: she’s 9 years old, completely healthy and appears to be a blue heeler/Australian shepherd mix.

It didn’t take long before she won us over with her playfulness, gentle kisses, sweet snuggles and quirky behavior. We’ve come to adore this sweet girl and it looks like she’s had a rough life being as how she’s missing a small portion of her ear with a scar behind it.

EmmyLou loves snuggling up on the couch. She walks wonderfully on a leash and though interested in other dogs she sees, doesn't show any fear or aggression to them. She loves playing fetch, car rides, ear rubs, frozen broccoli, decimating her squeaky toys and sleeping at my feet all day while I work. She's not a fan of the crate, but has been left alone in the house and been completely non-destructive. Though she's not particularly "talkative," EmmyLou will alert you to cars and people approaching the house.

Why are we rehoming this wonderful dog? Though our 11-year-old-lab and EmmyLou get along 95% of the time, the other 5% they have clashed quite intensely when it comes to food, toys, bones or treats. One of those scraps--instigated by our dog-- ended with both dogs being bitten. After hours of research and training, separating meal and treat times, we just feel they both deserve to be in a less stressful situation and they both deserve a home where they feel safe. We're looking for a home where EmmyLou can be the only dog.

We fell in love with EmmyLou, as I’m sure someone else will as well, and it breaks our heart we have to do this. We would absolutely be willing to take her back if for some reason she’s not a good fit--anything to keep her from being dumped AGAIN or taken to a kill shelter. We desperately want her to find her furever home."
