My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you!

Nine year old Maggie May is one of the sweetest dogs you will ever meet! She is always searching for a lap, and would cuddle with you all day if she had her way. Weighing in at only a little more than nine pounds and with such an adorable irresistible face, it is easy to oblige her.

Maggie had a rough spell before coming into rescue. Her elderly owner passed away, and due to her owner’s poor health, Maggie had unfortunately also been very neglected. She was very underweight and had severe mouth pain because of inadequate dental care. Consequently she needed to have many teeth pulled. After having a dental and losing about 20 teeth, she is now feeling much better. She is having an easier time eating, and boy does she love her food now!

Maggie is really an easy dog to care for. She is housetrained and walks well on a leash. She likes other dogs, but human companionship is most important to her and she is happiest just being with you. She is housetrained and is accepting of people, although if there are children in the home they should be over the age of ten. She sleeps in her own bed at night but would love to share her adopters’ bed if they will let her. She has beautiful fur, but it is very silky, so if it is recommended that she be kept in a short puppy cut, otherwise she will require frequent brushing to avoid matting.

Maggie is almost the perfect dog, but her one slight fault is her way of communicating to you that she wants your attention, food, or treats. She does this by vocalizing, usually by whining or low groaning. While she doesn’t bark very often, she vocalizes a lot. You can have whole conversations with her! Some might find this endearing, but adopters should try to discourage her vocalizing (which is a learned behavior and can be overcome). A single family home is recommended so that her vocalizations don’t cause problems with immediate neighbors.

A potential adopter must meet the following requirements:
• Reside within 30 miles of Plymouth, MN
• Be home much of the day. Maggie was accustomed to living with a stay at home elderly person and she is happiest if someone is home with her most of the time.
• No apartments or townhouses, which have shared walls and are discouraged due to Maggie’s vocalizing.
• A family of adults or one with children over the age of ten.
• Must have Maggie spayed at Northwest Animal Hospital (see explanation below).
• Commit to attending the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held each year in September.

Maggie is healthy, has had a dental, is current on vaccinations, microchipped, and is on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. She could not be spayed when she came into rescue because she was in heat. She is scheduled for spay surgery at Northwest Animal Hospital in Plymouth in mid-November. She can be adopted before then, but the adopters must keep her spay appointment at Northwest Animal Hospital and the rescue will pay for her spay. Maggie’s adoption fee is $170.00 plus $14.49 sales tax for a total fee of $184.49.

To meet Maggie, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see her and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at Chuck and Don’s at 6821 York Avenue South, Edina near Southdale.
