My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sweet Gertie is what we call a puppy mill survivor. Her first 6 months were spent in a cage with very little human contact, and then the breeder decided she was too old to sell. Rescues like ours step in to save these dogs before they are ‘disposed of’ by the mills. Thankfully, Gertie is young and resilient and her foster family has been teaching her the joys of being a real puppy!

After a week or so in rescue, Gertie started blossoming. Her first couple days she had her tail tucked and was avoiding human contact. After watching her doggie foster siblings, Gertie learned that humans are actually really great! Now Gertie LOVES her humans. She is a snuggly pup who wants to be in your lap, on the couch, on your bed cuddling and letting you know she loves you. And she loves being reciprocated with a nice massage!

Gertie has also learned the joy of playing with toys. She loves all types of toys…squeaky, balls, chews, and stuffed ones. One of her favorite activities is fetch and playing with the other dogs. Gertie is still a bit nervous on leash, but her foster family (and doggie foster siblings) are helping show her that going on walks is fun. Getting her on a daily walk schedule will be important for her forever family, and will help build her confidence.

Gertie is very treat motivated so training will be easy and fun. Her foster family is teaching her a few basic commands like ‘sit’ and ‘leave it’. She is very smart and learns quickly. Her forever family should plan to take her to a training class to continue this learning. Gertie is doing very well with potty training, but will need a refresher on the appropriate place to go at her new home.

Gertie is still very much a puppy, with puppy energy, but will settle down and chill with sufficient exercise and when she feels comfortable.

Gertie needs a patient, loving family who understands that she will be timid initially and will continue to blossom over time. Please note there are 2 ‘must haves’ in Gertie’s forever home: another playful/mentor dog and a fenced yard. If you’re interested in Gertie, please complete our adoption application.
