My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Please read the bio in full for answers to your questions. In the event you have a question that is not covered in the bio, please email info@seniordoghaven.org. If interested in adopting, please complete an adoption application which can be found at https://seniordoghaven.org/adoption-process/.

Please note that because all of our dogs live in foster homes, we are unable to set up meetings with a dog unless we have a completed adoption application on file. Adoptions must be about an hour of Wilmington, DE in order for our volunteers to be able to conduct an in person home visit.

Meet Cecil, the world’s sweetest dog. He is around 10 years old and 17 pounds, and our best guess is poodle mix. We don’t know his story before we met him. He was found as a stray and brought to a local shelter. He had badly infected eyes that also had glaucoma. He couldn’t see, and his eyes were bringing him nothing but pain. A vet near the shelter generously offered to perform his surgery and remove his eyes.
We had made arrangements to pull another little dog from this shelter, when they reached out. “I know this is a huge ask, but we were wondering if you would be able to find room for a small dog who just had both eyes removed”.
Of course we made room. And we are so glad we did!
We may not know his story up till now, but we know his future is bright and full of happiness.
Cecil is a love. He came to his foster home wagging his tail all the way. He is cautious but confident. He certainly doesn’t cower in a corner. He likes to go for walks, just go slow and guide him!
He lives with 5 other blind or mostly blind dogs, and does great with all of them. They bump into each other with no issues.
Cecil loves attention. If you stop petting him, he’ll just inch closer to remind you that your current job is to pet him, and you haven’t been released from your duty yet.
He is housebroken. Not ONE accident in the house. He whimpers when he has to go out, and when he’s done he comes to the door and whimpers to come in. That’s the only noise we’ve heard-no barking.
He is not on any medications.
He just needs a dental, on 10/16, then he’s good to go!
We simply can’t find enough superlatives to tell you what an awesome little guy Cecil is. He’s good with kids, and dogs, and would probably be good with cats, though we can’t guarantee that! He loves to find a soft bed to nap on. He eats well. He loves attention. He doesn’t mind being picked up. He rides nicely in the car on a blanket. He is learning some commands like “watch” if something is in his way, “step” to step on or off a curb (we haven’t tried a flight of stairs with him), and “ready” if we’re going to pick him up.
He is just the sweetest dog we’ve met in a long time. Some lucky family will hit the jackpot when they adopt Cecil!!
