My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Make A Difference in your Community - Adopt a Shelter Dog! Would you like to foster a Shelter Survivor? For more information, visit us at www.sheltersurvivors.com

Meet this gorgeous girl Kia! Kia is a six year old, female purebred Akita. Kia is being rehomed because her owner's home situation has changed. Kia's owner reached out to us (Shelter Survivors) in hopes that we can help Kia find her perfect forever home.

Kia was bred to be a show dog. Prior to her owner adopting her, she finished her championship. The breeder chose not to breed her and so he put her up for sale. Kia is a wonderful, wonderful dog! She’s mellow in the house, great on a leash, extremely friendly with people. While Kia loves people of all sizes, we feel she would do best in a home without young children. She loves to ride in the car. Kia is great at the vet and groomer and has stayed happily at the kennel when her owner has to travel. Kia has been in crowds in Princeton and on country hikes and she’s terrific. Kia has had multiple dog walkers and she’s great with anyone she is introduced to. Kia can be dog selective, but she does have a best dog friend in the neighborhood she plays happily with. So if you have a dog, a meet and greet is a must. Kia does best with non-reactive dogs. She would also be fine as the one and only. Kia is happy hanging around, but she can also be playful & loves balls and squeaky toys. She has a mild prey-drive, which is not a problem on walks or being outside; especially when you have treats to focus her attention on you. This could be a problem if there was a small animal in the house as an additional pet. Like most Akitas she’s quiet and almost never barks. Kia does get stressed at times, so she is on a bland diet to help her digestive tract healthy. She also takes Prozac to help calm her anxiety. She’s healthy, and up to date on all vaccinations. She has had a gastropexy to prevent bloat. She would be a wonderful companion and most of all she just wants your love.

Kia is a big girl who weighs about 98 pounds. We do feel that Kia needs an experienced owner. Previous Akita experience is a plus! If you think you would like to make Kia a part of your family, please fill out our Shelter Survivors application online to be considered.

Kia is up to date with her vaccinations and housetrained.

Adoption Fees:

Adoption fees are donations to Shelter Survivors, not payment for value received, and are based primarily on the age, health, and temperament of a particular dog, and our expenses. Shelter Survivors is not an actual shelter, and we are not subsidized. Most shelters receive municipal funding, while Shelter Survivors operates on adoption fees and donations. All of our members are volunteers, and none of us receives a salary or payment of any kind. Our funds go 100% toward the care of our dogs, primarily for veterinary expenses. Volunteers usually pay the costs for transport, fostering, phone calls, postage, and adoption screening out of their own pockets.

The adoption fees range from $200.00 to $300.00, which is a bargain when you consider that spaying/neutering, testing, training and inoculations are usually included. Any difference in fee is noted in the description of the individual pet. Many animals have been micro-chipped.

Go meet their pets

Please note that Shelter Survivors does not run a physical shelter but uses a unique network of loving foster homes to house the animals awaiting adoption. To meet one of the animals that you find on the web, come to our adoption days (see the "events" page of our website) or send us an application at sheltersurvivors@live.com. Most of our adoption days are at PetCo in Raritan (off of the Somerville Circle).

More about this rescue

Shelter Survivors was formed to serve the needs of dogs that have been brought to shelters in the tri-state area, by providing loving and expedient rescue, foster homes and placement with a great measure of compassion and through teamwork with you and other rescue groups and shelters. Our focus is primarily on shelter dogs, and we work with local shelters to help communities in our area. We believe in saving the lives of shelter dogs, one dog at a time.

Shelters Survivors is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Any financial support to help us care for our animals is very much appreciated and we also need dog food, crates of all sizes, beds and blankets for the pets in our care.

We do not have a shelter so we don't have visiting hours.
