My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Butters is an all around sweetheart. He loves people and other dogs. He learns very quickly! This boy is super smart. After being in foster care for only a few days he is potty trained and will tap the door to be let outside. Butter's loves to be groomed he feels pampered and will just lay at your feet. Butter's is very eager to please. He loooves his treats and belly rubs and will cuddle in with you for a movie.

Working on commands (sit, down, wait, leave it, touch and paw) as well as leash work, and he's already so much better on the leash. He's been reactive when meeting new people, particularly if they approach quickly, especially overhead or taking his leash before he knows them. We're working with a trainer on this and as long as there are treats involved, he gets over this very quickly and then can be petted all over and walks fine with other people.
He really wants to please and with consistency and slow and steady increasing of his social activities, he's going to make someone a great companion!

Feb 13 update from his loving fosters:
Since our last update, Butters has absolutely blossomed! He's even more affectionate, loving being with us and following us round the house as we go about chores, but he's now happy to settle with us out of sight too as he's grown in confidence in our home. His fitness has improved hugely and now loves lolloping around enclosed areas with us and other dogs. He particularly enjoys our recall games and he's great at running back and forth between us when called. We've also spent lots of time introducing him to a lot of new people and he's learnt to greet people nicely and is starting to trust strangers again. He'd still prefer no reaching over the head on first meeting, but with 2 minutes of treats, and chin scratches, he'll happily lean into anyone for pets and more treats! We've also been working hard on leash training, which he's now great at, only pulling occasionally to sniff or greet another dog.

He's looking for his forever home (with or without a resident dog) where he can go hiking, running and continue his training, as well as having plenty of time for snuggles!

More about this rescue

The Milo Foundation is an established 501(c)(3) nonprofit, no-kill organization providing an alternative for homeless pets throughout California, through education, adoption services, and providing sanctuary for animals until permanent homes can be found.

Founded in August of 1994, The Milo Foundation Sanctuary is located on two hundred and eighty-three acres in Mendocino County - offering lots of room for the animals to run and play. The Milo Sanctuary animals typically (but not exclusively) are harder to adopt animals and those needing more rural type homes, such as dogs with social or behavioural challenges, feral cats, horses and other farm animals. The Milo Point Richmond Adoption Center is where the majority of our new rescue intake takes place, typically friendly, adoptable cats and dogs, puppies and kittens rescued from shelters where they were facing euthanasia. The Sanctuary is where highly active or reactive dogs can go and have plenty of space, other canine companions (if they are dog friendly) and live in a stress free environment until such time as the right adoption match can be found.

The Milo Sanctuary is what enables Milo to be a No-Kill organization. Milo brings dogs back and forth from the Adoption Center (MPR) to the Sanctuary to give dogs a break from the stresses of the kennel environment and back to MPR later to try again at being adopted. Potential adopters also do come up to the Sanctuary to adopt, by appointment.
