My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Dexter (or Dex as his foster family calls him) is just the sweetest boy! If you want the “warm and fuzzies” every day (and who doesn’t!), look no further because it’s impossible to look at Dex and not smile!

Poor Dex has spent most of his life suffering through stressful situations. Starting his young life as a stray who landed in the shelter at a very young age, likely 6 months. His zest for life only caused him issues while in the shelter and his wiggle butt caused “happy tail” that required a partial amputation prior to his first adoption. Unfortunately, the amputation became infected, and a full amputation was needed but Dex doesn’t let that stop his wiggle! Sadly, it also didn’t stop him from returning to the shelter a year later through no fault of his own. Dex would be adopted again but it was far from a happy ending, and he spent his days and nights in fear tied up outside for months, slowly losing weight and hope, only to return to the shelter a third time with the bleakest of futures. Luckily, Dex had several people who knew he deserved the chance to find the loving family he deserves.

At a little over two years old, Dexter has only recently begun to meet humans that he can trust so he can be a little cautious at first when meeting new people, and who could blame him, but once he knows he’s safe it won’t take long for his personality to reel you in! He’s still a certified wiggle butt and he longs to be loved and adored and he truly deserves it! He didn’t get to have the care-free and joyful start to life that puppies deserve and you’d think that would make him overly energetic and uncontrollable but it’s the opposite, he’s very well behaved, eager to learn and able to easily match energy of both his human and doggy friends. For these reasons, we think a home with older children would be best!

Dex weighs about 50 lbs but is on the petite side, making him more aerodynamic when he runs, and boy is he fast! He loves all toys and is happy to engage in well mannered play with his foster doggy sister or entertain himself in his crate. Dex has already learned “sit” and “leave it” and waits patiently for his meals until he receives his release command. He loves playing with puzzles and treat toys and has mastered quite a few already. Dex can be startled, especially when outside, by loud or unknown noises and may need some patience in getting to know his new surroundings but he always looks to his human for guidance and often pushes his little wiggle butt right up against your leg, known by his foster family as the “Dexy-dock” to re-enforce his confidence.

Dex does great on the leash when he has a doggy friend with him but can be a little cautious and unsure when by himself and, again, just needs some patience to become comfortable with his surroundings. Dex is a little scared of storms, especially with loud thunder or hail, and becomes a little vocal at the start of the storm but takes only a few minutes to recognize he is safe and calm himself down.

Dex is fully housetrained, and crate trained, his crate has become his “safe space” and will often go in without instruction just to have some alone time. He responds well to both human and doggy correction and quickly learns routine. He rides well in the car and while he’s curious about cats and may get a little nosey, he’s not aggressive and could easily live with doggy and kitty siblings, with proper and slow introductions. Dex is a true joy to be around and any one would be lucky to scoop him up!
