My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

COURTESY LISTING - NOT A PAWS4YOU DOG. IF INTERESTED PLS CONTACT 305-439-0085 OR keypsychiatry@gmail.com

Where did you get your dog? (e.g., stray, shelter, friend, breeder): Havanese / Maltese breeder

If you got your dog from a breeder what was the Kennel Name/Breeder Name: we don't know. He was a gift for my mom when my father passed away

Dog's Weight: 17

Dog's Name: Benji

Dog's Age: 13

Is your dog:: Neutered

City Dog is Located: Parkland

State Dog Is Located In: Florida

Please make selection below.: Certify

Good with cats?: Not sure

Describe in detail anything listed above: He's never been exposed to cats, he absolutely loves his sibling dogs over the years. My mom always had 2-3 because she'd rescue other dogs. He's lived with a total of 7 dogs of 13 years.

Reaction with dogs?: Barks

Describe in detail anything listed above: He is the protector of all dogs, and the person he is closest to.

If there is a new dog introduced to the family, it doesn't take him long to let the dog know he is the boss. He will stand as tall as his legs will take him, face the dog, and release a few strong barks. He doesn't attack any people or dogs. I've never met a dog that didn't stand down when Benji barks at them. He's my mom's dog, but our Doberman was put in his place from when he came home at 5 months old. Axel is 2 and still allows Benji to be the alpha dog :)

Reaction with children under 12?: Friendly

Describe in detail anything listed above:

He loves everyone in the family. He guards them, and protects them. He's raised my three daughters since the eldest is 12 and the twins are 9. He'd always appreciate any stuffed animal any of the girls would give him. He will take his toy to his place for safe keeping, always go back and give whoever gives him a stuffed animal something in return within his reach. If nothing is accessible, he will take a dog toy from the box and give it to that person. if the person forgets to take it when they get up, he will drop it off next to that person's bed to be found later.

Reactions with children over 12?: Friendly

Describe in detail anything listed above:

He's been with our family always. The girls are older now. He is equally loving and their protector. He expects to sit with you to watch TV. He needs his own small blanket on the couch for a movie, or will take yours without skipping a beat.

Since my mom had the accident, he asks to sleep with one of my daughters. he sticks to the twins bedroom mostly, but sometimes I find him snuggled next to our Doberman by morning

Dog's Reaction to Grooming: Enjoys

Describe in detail anything listed above:

he's used to begin bathed weekly

Dog's Reaction to Vet Visit: Dog is generally comfortable

Describe in detail anything listed above:

he may start shaking once you get in the car leaving the vet. It's likely because he was nervous.

Does this dog have special needs?:

He can still see, but his vision is compromised by cataracts on both eyes.

Explain the circumstances prompting you to request assistance for the dog, or why you desire to surrender this dog to HRI.:

My 82yo Mom suffered a fall with Benji 2 weeks ago that puts us in an absolutely terrible position. She has multiple fractures that are unfortunately inoperable. 7 fractures in total. Her bone lesions due to advanced cancer make this recovery very long and tedious. All orthopedics involved in her case have driven home the message very clearly. She can no longer be in the company of any small dogs what so ever. After rehab, Mom will need to live with us for an undefined amount of time. Not only can she no longer have her little partner Benji with her, but our family can not have any small dog in our home at all if she is to spend any time with us during or after recovery. She would not survive another fall.

Additional adoption info

There is an adoption application used as a pre-screening tool (available on paws4you.org/application), references are required and house visits are made by volunteers. We request a donation with every adoption which includes sterilization, microchip & registration, current vaccinations and a heartworm/ehrlichia test. The adoption donation covers the boarding and medical expenses incurred on all rescues, not just one.

More about this rescue

PAWS4you Rescue, Inc. is a non-profit, volunteer 501(c)3 animal rescue organization based in Miami, Florida. Our top priority is to save animals from euthanasia at Miami-Dade Animal Services. An average of one hundred animals are destroyed every day at this county shelter! Rescued animals vary from being sick, injured, homeless and surrendered to simply lost. We give these animals a safe environment, professional medical care, hope and lots of love. Our animals are sterilized, vaccinated and ID micro-chipped. Some require major surgery from a specialist to repair broken limbs while others may need additional rehabilitation time and specific medical care - ranging from bordetella (kennel cough) and skin infections to cherry eye and heartworm treatments. Once Paws 4 You Rescue commits to helping an animal, we seek the best quality treatment available - taking no shortcuts. Our dogs stay at veterinary clinics, boarding facilities and foster homes until they find their forever families.
