My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

FOSTER NOTES:
Take another look at Poppy!! Poppy weighs about 10 pounds, is 4-years-old and often looks sad and nervous. Poppy came from a hoarding case in mid-July, to the local county animal shelter where SAFE took her into our care. She was pregnant at the time and had 3 lovely puppies, Abby, Mazie and Sadie, who have been adopted. We do not know much of her history but she was flea and worm infested from her previous home. She had lost a lot of her hair and it has grown back nicely. While on the shy side, Poppy takes time to warm up to people. She is a cute little dog who takes her time to come up to new people. Once she becomes comfortable with her person, she is interested in where you at all times and wants to be a lap warmer. If you are sitting on the sofa, she will come up to you for petting and stretch herself into your lap. She enjoys sitting and napping on the back of the sofa during the day and sleeping in bed with the rest of us at night. She also spends time resting in dog beds. Poppy is house trained and uses a pet door, but she almost prefers potty pads if there is one available. It may be important that you have a pet door because she is initially reluctant to get close enough to you to go on walks or have you open a door. She gets along with other dogs and is learning to leave the cat alone. When needing any correction, a firm "no" gets her attention. I have not seen Poppy play with toys or other dogs. I have pet steps in my home for the bed and sofa and Poppy easily uses them. She does bark at people outside the house, people she doesn't know and especially at men. She doesn't like men and I can't recommend she be adopted into a home where a man lives. She will bark at them constantly. I have put a humane bark collar on her when I have company and it works to keep her from barking. Poppy was adopted into a home and returned because she became aggressive with the man and the other dog after she bonded with the woman. The couple said they could work with the man problem but couldn't make their dog unhappy. She has not been aggressive with my two dogs or any other foster dogs in my home. They are all getting along. When she's happy and comfortable, her little tail wags fast and she has a cute body movement "crawl". I especially see this when she goes to bed ahead of the rest of us and we join her there. Poppy deserves a lady who will give her lots of love and support. She will do best in a quiet home with a special female person(s) who can be patient and understanding.
