Meet Ozzy and Lorelai, our resident Romeo and Juliet.
Lorelai's former human got her and a few other bunnies and kept them on their porch. At least one of the bunnies was male and the number of rabbits kept on this porch started to grow. By the time animal control seized the rabbits, well over 25 rabbits were living in a small, cramped area in deplorable and filthy conditions.
What didn't grow along with those bunnies was the amount of food and water that was made available to them.
The younger generations of rabbits started to resource hoard and attacked Lorelai and the other older bunnies to keep them away from the limited food and water that was given to them.
When Lorelai came to us, one of her eyes had been torn and partially removed during one of these attacks. We had to remove the rest of the eye and clean infection from the eye socket in order to save her.
Ozzy (or Ozzy Bear as his foster calls him) came to us as part of a dumping case in North Miami. Someone dumped a number of domestic rabbits into a local park. Because domestic rabbits have been kept contained their entire lives and cared for by humans, they have very limited survival skills. Ozzy and his friends were being picked off one-by-one by feral cats.
Lorelai was shut down when she came to her foster. She didn't want or liked to be touched--she cowered every time a hand came near her. She spent all day huddled in a corner. She wouldn't accept treats and only ate them once her foster walked away. She didn't even want to be around other rabbits and would flinch every time a rabbit came near her.
Then she met Ozzy and something about Ozzy's calm and friendly demeanor started to crack Lorelai's shell. With these two, it was love at first sight.
Ozzy will push pellets and treats towards Lorelai if she doesn't seem them. Where Ozzy goes when free roaming, Lorelai follows. If they are given two pieces of carrots, they will share first one and then the other.
They are looking for a very special home. Their Forever Family will need to understand that Lorelai has severe trust and anxiety issues. It took her foster over a year before she could pet her without Lorelai flinching and running away. She does not like to be picked up at all. However, she loves her Ozzy and he makes her braver (he's her emotional support rabbit).
They would do best in a quiet home with no small children. Other pets would be fine (Lorelai actually cuddles with one of her foster's cats). They would need a home base but also the change to free roam daily as they both like to explore.
Is your home the perfect Forever Home for this duo? If so, apply to bring Lorelai and Ozzy home for the holidays!

SOS FL Animal Rescue is a non-profit rescue for rabbits and guinea pigs. We are animal lovers who are experienced rabbit and guinea pig owners. We both fostered small animals with other rescues for years before meeting each other and deciding to start our own rescue so that more rabbits and guinea pigs could be saved. We take in all rabbits and guinea pigs, including unwanted animals, seniors, and medical cases.
