My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Charlie, the six-year-old cuddlebug with a heart of gold! This sweet boy loves burrowing under blankets and going on leisurely walks. He has been described by friends as relaxed, playful, and cuddly. He's so smart and even knows tricks like paw, shake, high five, and sit. He's a staff favorite at the shelter, just look at some of the things they've said about him:

"Charlie is such a good walk and loves giving kisses!"

"Charlie is so sweet and loves to run!! He loves to sniff and explore and has so much personality once he's out of the kennel!

But don't take it from us, stop by the Center and see how great Charlie is for yourself, maybe take him on a pet-cation to get to know each other and explore the town. Not able to adopt right now? Consider fostering or donating towards Charlie's care instead. Email us at adoption @lynchburghumane.org for more info!

The process is simple; you come and visit with the pet you are interested in, we review your adoption form and you can take them home that day. If the pet is not spayed or neutered then we will set you up with an appointment for our transport to our clinic. Please bring with you a photo ID and you are welcome to bring in your dog to do an introduction with your new pet.

We have dedicated volunteers and staff who can help you choose the right match for your family just ask for assistance and let us know what your needs are and we can help you find your next friend.

Placing an animal on ‘hold’: The Lynchburg Humane Society wants your adoption experience to be as pleasant and as stress-free as possible which is why we allow potential adopters to place holds on animals so that they can take their time making adoption decisions, introducing family members and other pets, and researching breed traits. Holds may be placed over the phone or in person, and in the case of a “tie”, the individual physically visiting the shelter and the animal will be awarded the first hold on the pet. Adoption holds may only be placed during business hours by speaking with a team member and paying the hold fee.

1st hold: $20
2nd hold: $15

More about this shelter

For over fifty years, the LHS has operated as a private, non-profit organization, caring for lost and homeless pets. Last year, we cared for 3,981 pets and 96% of the pets went to new or existing homes. We are a No Kill Humane Society and a 501c3. By operating the public shelter for the City of Lynchburg and Appomattox County, we accept the stray or unwanted pets surrendered to us from those communities. We also have developed a more regional/state level focus. In 2016 we helped 602 pets from other public shelters that otherwise may have had a negative outcome. We accept those that are easily adoptable as pets, as well as those that need special nurturing from abusive or neglectful experiences. We firmly believe that no healthy or treatable pet should be euthanized. Along with our Center for Pets we also have a regional spay/neuter clinic located in Evington, VA. The spay/neuter clinic serves Lynchburg, Campbell, Nelson, Rockbridge, Appomattox, Bedford and Amherst Counties. It is the help of the community that makes our life-saving programs possible.

Mission: Help pets in need thru sheltering, adoption, education, spay/neuter and community outreach.

Vision: A community free of homeless and neglected pets.
