My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sweet Tyrone ended up at the shelter and was going to be euthanized the next day but thanks to the efforts of animal advocates who brought an amazing foster to our attention and literally saved his life!

This was the post that drew us in to help...

"If I could tell you about the life I have lived, I suspect it would break your heart as it has min. And maybe, just maybe you would understand why I am the way I am and you would want to help me.

My name is Tyrone and unless a miracle happens, the last few days of my life will be lived at the Pet Resource Center in Tampa.  There is an end-date on me, October 24 so I don't have much time to find help.

I won't bore you with my early history, but this is my second time at PRC.  My first stay got started in March 2022.  I was a happy, social boy that got along with everyone.  I weighed 72 lbs and loved to go on car rides, get scratches  and be with people.   I was scared of cats and squirrels, but this is about the worst I could say about myself.  I guess I was a pretty appealing guy, because I got adopted in October 2022.

Fast forward to September 2023 when I was surrendered to the shelter because my owner had sudden medical problems. I was left alone in the home for a week until animal control picked me up. When I arrived at PRC I was only 37 lbs. Yes, you read that right, 37 lbs. I went from 72 lbs to 37 in about one year. The shelter has worked with me and I am now 49 lbs, but they don/t have the space or resources to keep me until I am at a good weight again.  I am 11 years old and they have to decide who lives and who dies.  And lately they have had to make those decisions far too often.  They can't waste space on an old dog like me.  Especially one with some issues. I understand, but I don't like it. I don't want to die.

Anyway, I will be honest, the past year has changed me. I am not the easy, social boy I was before.  I still love people when I feel comfortable, but sometimes my past intrudes. When something scares me, I sometimes growl to let people know. I have been in playgroup twice and have been ok.

I guess I would say I don't feel comfortable in my own skin anymore because of the life I have led. i am nervous and no longer believe that life will treat me well and that all people are kind. I miss the old me and need a chance to find myself again before I die.  I need help to become the happy, balanced boy I once was.I need time to decompress, a routine, good chow and some boundaries. i need stability so I can learn to trust and feel safe. Because I sometimes get scared, I probably shouldn't live with children because they move fast and have squeaky voices. A fenced yard would be awesome, but mostly I need a person that will stick with me and not give up.

Anyway, I have taken up enough of your time. I am not a perfect dog. I'm old & skinny and have developed some quirks and behaviors that will need time and routine to work it out.  I'm sorry about that and I know I will need a special owner that is willing to work with me. I didn't choose to become the dog I am now, life circumstances made me what I am today.  I hope there is someone out there that will give me a chance.

Thank you so much for giving me the time to tell my story. Most people won't be able to help you, but if they could share this maybe it will reach that special person that can.  I am a really good guy, I just need a chance.

With love and hope,

Tyrone"

..........................................................................................

We know he must have been loved at one point.  He will learn again what it is to be cared for again! He is getting good nutrition, vet care and possibly even a new name for a new life! Tyrone is a big goofball, very skinny but so sweet. He's crate trained but is not a fan of them, he isn't destructive in the home environment so can be left out in the home (unless there will be another dog there when not home, just being responsible for their safety).
