CLAWS' goal is to get every cat and kitten ready for adoption as soon as possible! Our process includes a full medical check-up, all necessary shots, spay/neuter, socialization if necessary. Once our felines are ready for public view...they participate in one of our Saturday Adoption Events at PetSmart from 10 am to 5 pm!

How To Find Your Best Feline Friend

1. Find the cat you would like to adopt
2. Fill out an application and be approved. We care about the welfare of our cats and kittens, and therefore require a completed adoption form that is reviewed and approved by a CLAWS representative. We do reserve the right to refuse any applicants. All adopters will be contacted for a follow-up to ensure that their new cat/kitten is doing well and to answer any questions they may have.
3. Pay the adoption fee: $65 for cats plus $15 for micro-chipping and registration; $85 for kittens (six months old or younger) plus $15 for micro-chipping and registration (see information below). We do not discount cats; the difference in adoption fees is to give an adult cat the same chances for adoption as a kitten. This fee covers a portion of our costs to provide medical care ( wormed, vaccinated, flea-free and tested for FeLV, FIV and heartworm), spay/neuter, food, and shelter while in our care. Of course, if you would like to donate a little bit extra to the cause....we wouldn't turn it down!
4. Make a difference in your new best friend's life!

Our volunteers are in every morning for 5 to 6 hours to clean the shelter, and provide food, water, care and love for the kitties. If you are interested in meeting adoptable cats at the shelter, please call the shelter in advance to make an appointment. We also hold adoption events every Saturday at PetSmart in Grand Junction. Please note that CLAWS' kittens are housed in foster care, not the shelter.

The Importance of Spay/Neuter
Unfortunately, there are just too many cats. In the United States it is estimated that there are 60 million house cats and also a feral population of approximately 60 million. Research shows that any unsterilized house cat will contribute to the feral population within its first 2 years of life. The only real solution to overpopulation is spay/neuter, and every responsible cat owner should make sterilization a priority to ensure that their pet does not contribute to the tragedy and suffering of cats in feral colonies.

Adoption is the Best Option!
All CLAWS cats are spayed/neutered before adoption with no exceptions. In addition, they are tested for FIV/FELV, receive their vaccinations, are dewormed and microchipped. This ensures that CLAWS cats are preferable to kittens or cats offered for free in newspapers or online.

Are Free Cats Really Free?
NO! Responsible cat owners know that to spay/neuter, microchip, vaccinate, and get a health check by a vet will cost them far more than the adoption fee charged by CLAWS.

Where Do CLAWS Cats Come From?
CLAWS does its best to help all cats in need in the Grand Valley. Many cats are brought to us from agencies such as Mesa County Animal Services. Some cats are surrendered by people who may have to move or who have lost their homes. Litters of kittens are brought to us by owners who have not spayed/neutered their own cats. And some are simply found - frightened, hungry and in need. They are brought to us as their last chance at finding a loving home.
