Selma was pulled from a list of dogs who were going to be euthanized. We know she is a tough case based on how fearful she is, however we had the room to give her a chance and so far, she’s exceeded all of our expectations. We hope that with training and time we can help her find balance in her scared little brain and see that people really aren’t so bad.

First impressions:

Strangers: Extremely timid with people, we pulled this girl knowing full and well that she will take a couple months of training and rehabilitation to become adoptable. At present she is very fearful, shies away and will not approach new people she does not know.

Dogs: Loves ALL dogs. Selma is very dog social and will match the play style of her friends. She is currently living in our Kennel, where she gets to go out to Doggie Daycare multiple times a week to spend time with many of her friends. When the play gets too intense, she becomes submissive and rolls on her back, so she makes the perfect playmate for many dogs.

Cats: Unsure with cats, we will test her once she settles in. She is however quite prey driven towards the resident chickens, noteworthy, but this does not necessarily mean she couldn't live with cats.

Kids: Though we have not tested her with children we feel that based on her timid-ness she'd do best in an adult only home with another canine companion who is confident to show her the ropes, this could change after spending some time in care.

Crate: Selma is clean in her kennel and goes in and although the first few days she was apprehensive going out, she has no hesitation going back in, she seems to like her kennel!

Leash: Clearly has minimal or no leash experience and acts semi-feral on leash. She panics, tries to get away and gator rolls when leashed. This is currently being worked on.

Car Skills: Thus far, she has shown to be quiet in her crate.

Energy Level: Medium to high energy, runs like the wind outside, but settles quickly in her kennel.

Confidence: Very unsure, will need consistent training and positive reinforcement to build her up.

Affection: With the people she trusts she will lean into you and then flop over for belly rubs, but does take time to build this trust.

Resources: Has not shown any issues with people or other dogs thus far.

Training: very food motivated, takes food a little rough, but is eager to train.

Behavioural: Even though Selma was the equivalent of semi-feral when leashed at the shelter, she showed no indication of wanting to bite. Given her level of fear, this was reason enough to give her a chance. Behaviourally, she will need work on building confidence and counterconditioning her aversion to the leash (which admittedly has already improved leaps and bounds).

Best traits: absolutely adorable, great with all dogs, clean in her kennel, food motivated and eager to train.

Needs improvement: Positive introductions to the leash and building confidence with humans.

Selma is in perfect health! She currently has her spay appointment scheduled for the end of Nov 2023, and has one more booster shot left to be completed. Otherwise, she is up to date on her vetting. **She has not yet been heartworm tested**

Additional adoption info

Step 1: Complete an Adoption Application

Send your completed application to taffyslegacy@gmail.com. Please be as thorough as possible when filling out the application so we can make sure we find the best possible match for you! If you are interested in a specific dog, please indicate the dog on the application; that being said, all applications are considered 'general' and you only need to fill out ONE application with our organization.

Step 2: Application Review

We will screen your application to determine if all necessary information was provided. We will contact you to provide additional information if needed. If you have listed any 'Reasons to Return' we will ask you to elaborate so that we know what you are and are not willing to work with.

Step 3: Reference Checks

There are three (potential) parts to a reference check. Please make sure you have notified ALL APPLICABLE REFERENCES that they may recieve a call from a TLC volunteer.

(i) LANDLORD: If you rent your home, your landlord will be contacted to make sure you have approval to have a dog in your home. We understand that a landlord is not allowed to stop a tenant from owning a pet except under specific situations, but we want to ensure that the dog is going to a welcoming environment.

(ii) VET: A TLC volunteer will contact the veterinary reference you provided. We do this to ensure all your current animals are up-to-date on vaccinations, as well as neutered or spayed. If you currently do not have any pets, we will ask about the veterinary care that your previous pets received. You NEED to call your vet and give them permission to discuss your file with a TLC volunteer.

(iii) PERSONAL: A TLC volunteer will contact your personal references and ask them questions about you and your interactions with current or previous animals. If there are any concerns or questions after speaking to your references, we will contact you.

Step 4: Home Visit

TLC requires a home visit to determine that the dog will be living in a safe environment. This is also gives us a chance to get to know you, your home and lifestyle. It is the first time we get to meet and talk to you directly.

The home visit is very informal. We do a walk-through of your home to see all of the places the dog would have access to, as well as check out the back yard. All members of the household must be present for the home visit. If our volunteer has any concerns or suggestions, they will discuss it with you or will relay the information back to us. Volunteers are not authorized to tell you whether or not you are approved during the home visit, this is up to TLC’s Core Team.

Step 5: Approved Adopter

Once we have had a chance to review all of the pieces of your application, we will send you an email letting you know you are an approved adopter. From there, you can request to meet with a current dog in care, or wait until a good fit comes along. Once you have become an approved adopter, you don't need to restart the application process for every dog you're interested in. You simply need to send us an email and we will let you know if we feel the dog is a fit or not.

Please note that we do not guarantee a specific dog once you are an approved adopter. Some dogs receive many applications and we may allow multiple applicants to have a meet and greet with the dog in order to choose the home that we feel will be the best fit.

Step 6: Meet & Greet

We are a foster-home based rescue so all of our dogs are located in foster homes. Our foster homes put a lot of time and energy into providing a stable environment for our dogs. We do not arrange meetings between individuals and our dogs until a potential applicant has been approved through the adoption process. Once an applicant has been approved, we will connect you with the foster home to set up a time to meet the dog or dogs that you are interested in. All applicants are required to meet the dogs at their foster homes.

Step 7: Follow Up & Finalization

We will email you the adoption contract. Once the contract is signed and sent back along with the adoption fee, we will arrange with the foster home for you to pick up your new addition!

More about this rescue

At TLC, we are passionate about helping rescue dogs find their perfect humans. Our goal is to 'upcycle' homeless dogs by giving them the tools they need to succeed in their furever home. We accomplish this by having amazing fosters who volunteer their home, time and love to giving these dogs a second chance. In foster care we get to know their personality and their needs so that we can find the ultimate pairing of two-to-four-legger(s). We show them the ropes of being a human's best friend and then you -- the furever human -- can take it from there.

The majority of our dogs are rescued through the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and other remote communities in Northern Ontario and Quebec. TLC is not a rehoming agency, and will not be accepting owner surrenders.

We plan to set the bar high here at TLC with only the most ethical adoption and vetting protocols and standards. All dogs will come fully vaccinated, microchipped, heartworm tested and spayed/neutered.
