My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Spike is a sweet boy who is looking for a fresh start. He has lived in two other homes in the past year, both of whom did not come to claim him at the shelter when he was picked up by Animal Control. We are keeping our paws crossed that third time is the charm for Spike. He has struggled with his time at the shelter, but recently went to a new foster home where he is enjoying the good life. His foster mom reports that he is very well-behaved in the home and seems to be housebroken- he has never had an accident. He also really enjoys the company of his two doggy foster brothers. He has become very fond of his foster mom, following her around the house and asking for back scratches. He also shares his foster home with cats and two young children, and has been getting along well with everyone. Spike REALLY loves toys and has been steadily working his way through a large box of squeaky toys, chew bones, tennis balls, etc. It's obvious someone has done some training with him, because he can sit, lay down, shake with both paws, and he is excellent at catching treats thrown to him. He is very smart and treat motivated and is working on learning a couple new tricks too.

Because of the stressful situations Spike has been through recently, he has been dealing with some issues caused by his anxiety. He lost a lot of weight at the shelter, but his appetite has returned and he's starting to gain it back. When he feels overwhelmed, Spike has also developed a habit of spinning in a circle and trying to bite his tail. His foster home is working with him to help him feel comfortable and reduce his need to spin. We are confident that a stable home life will improve this behavior, but he will need help with his recovery in his new home. Spike has been so patient waiting for the right family to come along and never abandon him again. Although he has been through a lot, he still has love, loyalty, and big happy smiles to share with his forever home.

More about this shelter

Welcome to CMHS! In continuous operation since 1943, the Central Missouri Humane Society promotes the well-being of companion animals – pets that enrich the lives of the people who love them.

The Columbia Humane Society was formed in 1943 to provide shelter and care for Columbia’s abandoned animals. Originating in a little structure on Creasy Springs Road, the organization has grown into today’s Central Missouri Humane Society, a regional animal welfare agency caring for thousands of animals annually and providing veterinary services for low-income pet owners.
