My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Wilbur (3.5 yrs/85lbs) is one of the Great Ones; a very special dog who is both athletic and emotionally intuitive. He's a healthy, handsome "tiger dog" Playful, smart, and very cuddly. He is well-trained in all the basic commands, and loves people and other dogs. Does not destroy human belongings or chew shoes. He is incredibly gentle with kids - a great family dog. Except no small dogs or cats for Wilbur.
He has been around kids his whole life so he is gentle with little kids (will roll over and show his belly so they can pet him), and appropriately playful with big kids.

He is neutered, fully vaxxed, mcrochipped and DNA tested.

Wilbur is FUN. Loves the beach, hiking, playing frisbee and fetch. He loves to run alongside you while jogging or rollerblading. Well behaved and social at dog parks. He's an excellent swimmer, and will help dig sandcastles.

Wilbur has had a life full of love, which shows in his sweet disposition.

Adoption application

Go meet their pets

START Rescue does not have a physical location, so our pets are typically either in foster homes, in boarding, or in board/train. We work very hard to facilitate meet & greets quickly and easily, once an application is submitted and approved. We are so grateful to our wonderful adopters and fosters who have given our pets loving homes.

More about this rescue

START Rescue's mission is to end the killing of adoptable pets, and to prevent cruelty and suffering for all animals. START Rescue conducts large-scale rescue-transport missions saving pets from overflowing "high-kill" shelters, coordinates critical spay/neuter efforts in underserved areas, funds pet retention and pet pantry programs in Southern California where pets are being surrendered to shelters in record numbers, and rescues pets from neglect, abuse, and/or abandonment. START's lifesaving mission prevents the euthanasia of over 1,500 pets per year and allows over 1,650 pets per year to be fixed, which prevents countless unwanted litters from being born. Since START Rescue launched in 2011, over 16,193 adoptable pets have been saved from euthanasia, and countless more have been spared a lifetime of suffering and neglect. We are committed to ending the killing of adoptable pets and moving toward a society in which all beings are healthy and happy. START has been named "2022 Top-Rated" by GreatNonprofits, and was awarded Guidestar's "Platinum Seal of Transparency". We are always in need of volunteers, transporters and fosters! Saving animals takes a HUGE village. Please email kaja@startrescue.org to find out more. Thank you!
