My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello, My name is Lando. I am 2 ½ years old, and I am labeled as a Terrier mix. I was found wandering the streets of Gulfport, MS-starving and fending for myself. A concerned citizen called the Animal Control officer in Gulfport, and he brought me to the Humane Society where I have begun to thrive (this will only last so long). I have come such a long way since I was brought to the Humane Society. I am a playful, energetic dog who wants nothing more than to snuggle up next to my human and enjoy the love that I so graciously deserve. When I first arrived at the shelter I tested positive for heartworm disease; however, my shelter friends started my treatment almost immediately. I have finished my whole heartworm treatment, and according to the shelter techs, 6-9 months from my date of my last injection (February 15th), I will be able to be retested for Heartworm disease and statistics say that 98% of us that have undergone and completed treatment will test negative.

I am a goofy, sweet, playful large breed dog who is just wanting a forever family to call my own. I love long walks, playing in the yard, and eating lots of treats. I don't know what my past looked like, but I can guarantee a lifetime of affection that I am desperate to share. I am an active boy who prefers a harness on my long walks, but I sure do love to cuddle. Please come on down and see me today.

We do offer meet and greets before you take a dog home, and we do recommend meet and greets for all dogs over the age of eight months to make sure that the dog will get along with your dog before they leave the shelter. We also offer a 'slumber party' program which allows you to take a dog home for three days before adopting to see if they are a good fit for your family. There is no cost or commitment for this - we provide the supplies, you provide the love!

HSSM is open for adoptions Tuesday – Friday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. No appointment is necessary to adopt, however, adoptions are first-come, first served. You must come to HSSM to complete your adoption and make sure you bring a photo ID, as it is required to complete adoption paperwork.
Our adoptable animals page is self-updating and displays ALL of HSSM’s adorable adoptable pets from “pocket pets” to birds and of course the hundreds of dogs and cats currently calling HSSM home! See one you like? Make sure you note your favorite’s name and animal ID number so that HSSM staff and volunteers can easily find him/her when you come in!
Adoptions are cut off every day about 30 minutes prior to closing and possibly earlier if volume is high. Weekends are busy and you may have to wait more than an hour (especially in the afternoons) so please be prepared.
