My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Male, 3 years old, 47 lbs

Good with: Dogs
Not tested with: Cats, Kids

House trained: Mostly, with an occasional accident

Energy level: Medium

Noise level: Vocalizes some

Must have: House with a yard, quieter area

Hey there, I'm Benji, your new furry friend full of wagging tails and boundless enthusiasm! You'll always find me with a toy in my mouth – squeaky or a ball, you name it! I just can't resist a good playtime. Running around in the yard is my absolute favorite, and boy, do I love the feeling of freedom in open spaces. Training sessions are a blast, especially when they involve food-based games. I'm a quick learner, and I love showcasing my intelligence and playful side.

Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of loud noises. Despite my zest for life, I might need a bit of help building confidence. I can sometimes be fearful, and I may be considered a flight risk while I'm adjusting to living in the city. I may lack confidence, but my endearing, goofy nature more than makes up for it.

As for training, I'm a work in progress. Building confidence, especially for potty breaks and walks, is on my to-do list. I'm getting the hang of housetraining – 80% success rate on a consistent routine. Just be mindful of changing things up; it might lead to a little oopsie on the carpet.

My days are filled with the things I love – playing with other pups, fetching, and zoomies! My energy level is just right – not too high, not too low. A yard is a must for me to thrive, and I promise I'll keep you entertained with my playful antics.

I do like to express myself with a bit of vocalization. I'm crate trained, playful, gentle, and even-tempered. On the flip side, new people make me a bit nervous, and I prefer a calm environment, especially in the city.

I'm quite the social pup – get along great with other dogs, but cats are still a mystery to me. I'm best suited for older, considerate kids, and having a companion animal would be awesome.

In a nutshell, I'm your lovable, goofy Benji, ready to bring joy and affection to a patient and understanding forever home. With your love and a consistent routine, I'll keep making progress on my journey to confidence and happiness. Let's embark on this pawsome adventure together!

My foster guardian says: “What Benji lacks in confidence he makes up for in endearing, goofy enthusiasm! He is a sweet and sincere boy who loves a good toy and playing with other dogs. You'll never need a cup of coffee again with his morning enthusiasm! He has some work to do to build confidence in the world - and it is amazing to watch his progress!”

Likes: Toys (all), running in the yard, learning and playing food-based games, playing

Dislikes: Loud noises or walking on the leash (yet)

My ideal home: A quiet home with a yard; owners with prior dog experience

Additional adoption info

Adoption area is Washington, D.C area, including Northern Virginia and Maryland. All adoptions require a completed adoption application. Our adoption coordinators will contact you soon after reviewing the application. Our adoption fee is $450 to help off set the costs of rescuing dogs in need. All dogs go to their new homes spayed or neutered, up to date on all shots, wormed (although a 2nd worming may be required), started on heart worm and flea and tick preventative and sometimes microchipped.

Although we try to be as accurate as possible, Rural Dog Rescue cannot guarantee the breed or full-grown adult size of any of the dogs or puppies in its care. Because many of these dogs were found as strays or are the result of irresponsible, unplanned breeding, we do not know the dog's exact background and can only list breed and size by our best educated guess. If exact breed and size are important to you, please consider adopting a dog from a specific breed rescue. We want our dogs to be adopted by people who will love and care for them forever for who they are - no matter what breed and size they turn out to be!

More about this rescue

Rural Dog Rescue is a non-profit organization whose mission is to save the lives of dogs and cats in high-kill shelters in rural areas with euthanasia rates of 80% or higher.

Mission Statement: Forever true to The Underdog, Rural Dog Rescue is dedicated to saving the lives of dogs in shelters who are often overlooked for adoption or rescue. We save the dogs who are at most risk of being euthanized: the hounds, the black dogs, the seniors, the sick and the broken. We make a commitment to reserve a minimum of 50% of the dogs we save to The Underdog. Root For The Underdog!

Rural Dog Rescue's home base is in Washington, DC. We support several high kill shelters that euthanize in 72 hours and whose kill rate is 70% or higher in rural areas of Virginia, West Virginia, North and South Carolina. Rural Dog Rescue also helps dogs in need in Washington, DC and Maryland.

We are 100% volunteer and foster based and no salaries are paid. 100% of your donation and adoption fee goes to helping the dogs and cats of Rural Dog Rescue.
