Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle. This allows for continued socialization, and learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process.

I welcome you all to meet Katniss, or as she is otherwise affectionately known in our house, Grumpy Hippo. Katniss is a Mini Bulldog, which essentially means that she is a Bulldog mixed with a Boston Terrier. Katniss will be a small to medium sized dog and will be about 30lbs give or take once she is fully grown. She will be a short stocky dog, but will be lean and agile enough for all the fun activities. Katniss is about 4 months old, and has a beautiful short coat of red and white fur, the markings on her face are really quite cute. She has such curious and inquisitive brown eyes, and she is oh so loveable.

Katniss and her siblings were taken in by Pound Dog Rescue from a puppy mill that was unable to sell them and decided to just offload them. Being taken into rescue at such a young age certainly saved these girls from the possible terrible life of neglect that often come with puppy mills. Katniss is a very happy go lucky puppy and loves to see anyone who comes into the house, she has not shown any fear to any people yet. Katniss is still a very excitable little puppy and one of her favourite things to do is to jump all over you to get lots of pets and attention, she really just want to make sure that we don’t forget about her, being as she is so close to the ground. We have been working on correcting her when she does this, and her forever home will need to make sure they stay consistent with keeping her from jumping as well.

Katniss is fully crate trained and she goes into her crate to eat her meals, as well as to spend some time while the family is gone, sleeping or if someone has some meetings at home. Katniss has loved her crate from day one and is more than happy to go right in if you have a tasty treat to give her when she goes in. Katniss is very quiet in her crates and there has only been the occasional time where she has made some noise, and usually its when she hears you coming home or waking up and it’s because she’s just so darn excited to come out and play. Katniss loves to go outside and run around in the backyard and play, she will go tearing off chasing the other dogs around the yard, or chasing leaves or toys. While having her own fully fenced backyard would be ideal, she certainly does not require it and would be happy in a home with a smaller backyard as long as her exercise needs were being met otherwise.

Katniss is still working on her leash skills and getting out for walks, she can be a bit timid when it comes time to exploring the outside world, but treats and lots of praise will have her walking like a pro with full confidence in no time. Training classes will help with her socialization big time, and being bulldogs are notorious for being stubborn dogs, training classes are even more important. We expect Katniss to be enrolled into a Basic Obedience/Level 1 obedience at minimum, however I can’t stress enough how beneficial advanced levels of training would be for a dog like Katniss. Continued training classes will help Katniss really understand what is expected of her and help her become the best dog that she can be. Anyone looking to adopt Katniss should do their research into the breeds and be fully aware of the medical issues that can come up with these breeds of dogs so they can be sure that they can provide her with the necessary medical attention down the road if it arises. Katniss has received a clean bill of health from the vet, but it is always best to be prepared for the types of health concerns that could arise for this breed down the road.

Katniss has only been on a few car rides, but she has done very well. Both times she has travelled securely in a crate and was happy to just curl up and lay down. Occasionally she would get up and give me some sweet puppy dog eyes, but she was always calm and quiet. Right now I would consider Katniss to be a medium to high energy dog, because she is still a puppy and she has lots of puppy energy. She loves to spend time in the back yard running around, and then she will come inside and will do lots more chasing, wrestling, keep away with toys and lots of chewing as well. Once she is tuckered out she will find a comfortable spot on the pet bed and curl up for a nice long nap, her absolute favourite place to nap is curled up with another dog. She has recently figured out how to jump up on the couch, and when we watch TV in the evenings she will jump up and sleep on the couch, occasionally she will snuggle with us, but for the most part she finds their own spot and curls up.

Currently Katniss is living in a home with adults, teens, old dogs, young dogs, big dogs and small dogs. She gets along really well with everyone and she seems to have a really good idea on how to change her play behaviour depending on who she is trying to initiate play with. She has been very respectful of our older dogs boundaries and tend to give them their space and not bother them too much. We also have a cat in our home and Katniss is extremely interested in our cat, she is very excitable when she sees her and are very interested in getting to where she is. Katniss has taken to barking at the cat if she suddenly pops up, but does settle down quickly. On the occasion that she has come face to face with the cat she have been very gentle, but when she is out of reach she does like to bark at her. I would suggest that if there is a cat in her forever home, that it be a dog savvy cat that understands how to behave around dogs.

Katniss is a big wonderful goofy girl, she will brighten your day with her happy go lucky attitude and her little wiggle bums that turn into wiggle body. Katniss really loves her people and will seek out affections and gets really excited when you talk to her. Katniss would do well on her own, but would fit into any crowd, she’s not bossy and is very go with the flow. She tends to be more laid back in the house when there are strange noises and doesn’t seem to be bothered by anything going on that doesn’t directly involve her. The best thing about Katniss is just how darn personable she is, when you talk to her she actually listens and she will react. Like mentioned above, we like to call her grumpy hippo or just grumpy, when we call her by this she will stretch our her back legs and then walk over to us with her full body wiggles, she is always just SO excited when we talk to her and interact with her. Katniss is such a sweet girl, she loves to crawl all over you when you get down on the floor to play with her, but she is also so at ease, she loves to lay on her back in your lap with her legs flopping in the air, you can tell that she is just so at ease.

Being Katniss is still such a young puppy, we will only consider a home for her where someone is home or has the capability to come home throughout the day. Puppies need to be taken outside for bathroom breaks very regularly when they are small and will not be able to hold it for an 8 hour work day. We are also looking for a family or person that is fully aware of the time commitment of a puppy and the work involved. Puppies are a total joy and bring so much love and happiness into a home, but you cannot underestimate the work and time involved in raising a puppy properly. They need constant supervision while young to expedite the house training stage and to ensure they aren’t chewing on anything inappropriate.

Katniss is looking to find her perfect forever home, somewhere she can grow and learn to become the best version of herself, go to lots of training classes, have lots of playtime, go out on adventures with their family, and most of all to never be left behind and to feel like a treasured family member for the rest of her life. Katniss has been an absolute delight to have in our home and her big personality will keep your heart full. If you think that you can offer Katniss the best home there could be, then I urge you to apply now!
