My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Lola ACCT-A-154118 is a 3 year and 4 month old female who came to the shelter on 12/18/23 as a owner surrender and has been in foster since 1/2/24.

Foster Notes:

5/6- I reflected on Lola's situation this weekend and I think unfortunately it might be best if I return her to the shelter. Even with the progress she has made I think she still needs a significant amount of time to work on her reactivity, and with both my work schedule and how dog-heavy my neighborhood is, I don't think that environment is with me. Is there a specific process to follow for bringing Lola back? I feel terrible for doing this, but I feel as though I've explored every option there is.

4/24- Just wanted to provide a few updates on this. Lola and I met John and his wife yesterday, and while they absolutely loved her (and she loved them), they decided she would be best in another home, given they have another dog and Lola's leash reactivity. I think based on these meetings it would be best if Lola was listed as needing to be the only dog in the home on her profile if possible. She has made incredible strides since I first took her in, especially with completing her GoodPup training course, however I believe she still needs a significant amount of time and patience before I could see her comfortably living with another dog in the house.

On a related note, I was wondering about the possibility of finding Lola a different foster home? I was thinking of reaching out through the ACCT foster facebook group, and was wondering if this was something that is allowed? She has been great and I am of course happy to have her with me until an alternative foster/adopter is found, but I fear I may have been a little over my head when taking her in given her reactivity, and wonder if she would do be better off in a home that has more experience/time to give her what she needs?

3/25- Lola's been doing pretty well in my home! She has opened up considerably since I took her in and doesn't mind being leashed at all (which she was a little apprehensive about in shelter/initially with me). She's crate trained, picks up new commands quickly, and loves to play fetch or cuddle on the couch.

I've been adding photos to her google drive, a link to which I've included here!

I did want to follow up with how she is on leash however. Earlier I had mentioned that she is very easily excitable when seeing other dogs out on our walks. Similarly with squirrels, once she sees one she will fixate on them and get very vocal, and it takes some time for her to settle down. I've tried following from a distance and rewarding her for being calm or focusing on me, but after about a month or so of doing this there has not been very much improvement. I'm concerned I may be out of my depth here, and was wondering if there was anything else that can be done for her? She's a very sweet girl but with how hyper-excitable she is on leash I would have a hard time imagining her living somewhere in the city or with someone that has other dogs.

2/20- "I took Lola in as a foster about a month ago and she has been nothing but a sweetheart the entire time. She loves sprinting in the snow just as much as snuggling up on the couch, and has been excited to meet everyone we've ran into on our walks.

She is house and crate trained, and while she does occasionally get fixated on a dog or squirrel while on leash she is very eager to learn (especially when treats are involved)

I'm not sure how she is with children, but she has been very friendly towards everyone she's met.

1/9- She finished the last day of her antibiotics today and hasn't been coughing for a while now so I would say her kennel cough is cleared up. She's gotten much more confident on leash and is very interested in every person/dog we walk by. She's had one accident in the house but otherwise she's been a huge couch potato and is doing great!
