My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

To apply to adopt, please fill out an adoption application here:

Rosie is the Lauren Bacall of dogs. Tall, slim, composed, attractive. She is in very good health but is arthritic. Rosie's hearing and vision are 100%. Rosie is largely a couch potato. She loves lying outside in the warmth of the sun, and loves napping indoors on cold or wet days. She would be a great companion for someone who works at home. Rosie cannot take long walks, but her arthritis is managed with pain meds and she is not in any stress. Rosie is 12 years old and weighs about 65 pounds. She is low-maintenance and low-activity. She is moderately affectionate. Underneath her self-sufficient exterior is a dog whose heart beats with joy when she experiences the love of a human.

Adoption fees are $200 unless otherwise stated.  Senior residents of Dot's Old Dogs Home are generally not available for adoption.  100% of adoption fees are put back into the rescue so that another lonely and neglected chained/penned dog or yard-sale dog can be rescued. We are grateful for your interest.

Upon approval, the adoption fee is non-refundable. The fee includes the following: de-worming; grooming (if applicable); heartworm, lymes, ehrlichia and anaplasmosis testing; all vaccinations including rabies; flea and tick treatment, microchipping and spay/neuter.

Please contact us if you have questions about our adoptable dogs, we would love to talk to you!

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

We require an adoption application; we check all references; we require a home visit; and upon adoption, we require the adopter to sign an adoption contract which says, among other things, that if the adoption doesn't work out, the dog must come back to Little Big Dog Rescue.

Go meet their pets

We are located in a remote rural county in Virginia. We take advantage of every opportunity to show our adoptable dogs, such as festivals and fairs. You can arrange a meet and greet by sending an e-mail request to lbdr@htcnet.org. We are willing to transport our adoptable dogs anywhere within a 50 mile radius of Monterey, VA in order to meet a prospective adopter.

More about this rescue

Little Big Dog Rescue has two missions. One is to rescue chained/penned and yard sale dogs. The other is to rescue senior dogs who are left homeless due to the death of an owner, or the owner moving to a nursing home. We are a home-based rescue. We have no physical shelter. Our foster homes are often the first time a chained/penned dog sees the inside of a house. While in foster care the dogs are socialized, house-trained, crate- and leash-trained, and get to experience the joy of being wanted and loved. After rescuing animals for several years, we started our non-profit in 2016. We are a small organization and are always looking for volunteers (foster, transport, fundraise, socialize dogs). We are also dependent on donations to cover our expenses. Donations are tax-deductible and 100% of donations go to the medical expenses incurred by vetting the dogs (spay, neuter, surgery for eye conditions, removal and biopsy of masses, etc).
