My name is Oira. I am a three and a half year old American Pitbull mix. I have not had an easy go here in the shelter. When I first arrived they told me that I was something like Heartworm positive, I had no idea what that meant. However, the shelter techs told me they would get it treated so that I could stand a fighting chance. I am excited to announce that my shelter friends have told me that I have completed treatment (meaning I have a 98% chance of testing negative within 6-9 months from my final injection). I am so excited because I feel like this will give me a fighting chance at getting adopted. I am playful, energetic, happy-go-lucky, and I love lots of attention.

We do offer meet and greets before you take a dog home, and we do recommend meet and greets for all dogs over the age of eight months to make sure that the dog will get along with your dog before they leave the shelter. We also offer a 'slumber party' program which allows you to take a dog home for three days before adopting to see if they are a good fit for your family. There is no cost or commitment for this - we provide the supplies, you provide the love!

HSSM is home to over 300 pets on any given day, most of which are looking for new forever homes! Your new best friend could be waiting at HSSM right now. Our beautiful, 41,000 square foot facility is currently open to the public. HSSM is open for adoptions Tuesday – Friday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. No appointment is necessary to adopt, however, adoptions are first-come, first served. You must come to HSSM to complete your adoption and make sure you bring a photo ID, as it is required to complete adoption paperwork.
Our adoptable animals page is self-updating and displays ALL of HSSM’s adorable adoptable pets from “pocket pets” to birds and of course the hundreds of dogs and cats currently calling HSSM home! See one you like? Make sure you note your favorite’s name and animal ID number so that HSSM staff and volunteers can easily find him/her when you come in!
