History

Lara was found abandoned on a hill in Ontario on December 7, 2022. Much to our surprise she was also pregnant and gave birth to 8 puppies on January 24, 2023 who have now all been adopted into their forever homes. We suspect she may have been previously abused prior to being found due to how weary she is of being pet and easily flinches when feeling a hand caressing her. Throughout the year that she has been with us she has been able to open up and demonstrate all the love she has to offer.

Personality

She is a very high energy dog who loves going for walks every single day. Lara enjoys going on long hikes and exploring different types of landscapes. She can also keep up with your running pace and maybe even outperform you. Chasing balls, playing tug-o-war, and fetching different toys are among other of her favorite pastimes. It truly takes a lot of time to tire her out because of how much energy she has. She has also become a true fan of car rides. When she first arrived, she was scared of getting into cars but now when you open a car door and tell her “up up” she does not hesitate and makes herself comfortable in the back seats. Just be sure she goes to the bathroom first if not she’ll be farting throughout the car ride.

She knows her basic commands of: sit, lay down, shake/give me paw, high five, and come. She has not mastered the stay command because she is a bit stubborn and wants to follow you everywhere, but with more training and positive reinforcement she can master the command. She is potty trained and will let you know she needs to go outside to do her duties by either pawing at the door or sitting by the door while staring at you.

Lara is a very affectionate dog once she warms up to you and loves to give you hugs and kisses. She’ll stand on her hind legs and embrace you whenever she sees you and needs love. She also believes she’s a small lap dog at times and will jump on top of you if you’re sitting and settle herself on your lap. Belly rubs are most definitely her favorite thing in the world and will give you a side eye if you come to a sudden stop.

She is not a picky eater and will eat either dry or wet food. Treats are always welcome. However, she does take forever to eat. She’ll take a few bites of her food, leave, and go back after several minutes to take more bites and then leave. It may take a couple of hours for her to finish her food. For the year she’s been with us this has always been the way she eats.

Cohabitation

Lara can be very quiet and reserved when meeting new strangers and tends to hide but all she needs is an endless amount of love, time, and a person/family who truly understands her active needs and personality. She has not interacted with kids before, so it is unknown how she would react being with them.

It is preferable and recommended that she be in a household as an only pet. She does not do well with other dogs or cats. She does not tolerate cats at all. She does well seeing other dogs while out on walks and interacts with them but that is the only time she tolerates them. Living with other dogs in the same household is a different scenario and displays some aggression towards them.

Favorite Activities

Walks
Hikes
Running
Car rides
Fetch
Belly rubs
Medical

None

Summary

Lara is a great dog that has so much to offer. She gives an endless amount of love after warming up to you. She would do well in a family that lives an active lifestyle and can provide her with adventures. All she needs is love and lots of time to cater to her lovable and special personality.

More about this rescue

Nancy Pearlman-Gonzalez, Founder and CEO, created Australian Shepherds Furever (ASF), a non-profit organization to promote the education, rescue, fostering and adoption of the Australian Shepherd breed of dog.
In July 2012, Australian Shepherds Furever (ASF) initiated as a page on Facebook. Hoping to have 1,000 members at the end one year, ASF quickly grew into a network of more than 75,000 dedicated individuals striving to provide aid and refuge to Aussies all over the country.
From these phenomena, the website www.australianshepherdsfurever.org was developed to educate the public on this intelligent and beautiful breed, and provide resources to those seeking help or willing to contribute to the Adopt, Save and Foster (ASF) philosophy. ASF filed for non- profit status in July 2013 and obtained its status in July 2014 and through proactive networking, partnerships, training/rehabilitation and fundraising, ASF has saved the lives of countless dogs to include those with Parvo, Mange, Tick Disease, Cancer, Pneumonia, broken limbs and some of the most extreme cases of abuse that one could imagine. ASF focuses on the Aussies that most would turn their backs on. ASF is in its 5th year and over 1,910 Australian Shepherds have been rescued from high kills shelters, abusive owners and other high-risk situations.
We, as humans, have a responsibility to uphold, shelter and care for those beings that are less fortunate, that are simply cast away. Thanks to proactive individuals who work collectively, Aussies nationwide are being given a chance at a better life through Australian Shepherds Volunteers are an integral component of ASF for the maintenance of the website, screening potential fosters and adopters, providing training, fundraising, data base management, networking and transporting of recued Aussies. All Volunteers; Adopters, Fosters, Trainers and Transporters etc. are carefully screened and vetted to assure the safe and vital placement of these dogs into furever homes. We currently have over 170 foster families and over 160 dogs in foster care nationwide. We have professional trainers to work with our dogs with severe behavioral issues. We also have a team of Rescue Coordinators, Medical Advisors, Fundraisers, Regional Reps, Application Processors, Data Base Managers, Social Media Managers, Microchip and ID tag Registrars and Ground and Air Transport Coordinators that work together to save these beautiful dogs.
