My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Saturn is a 3-4 month old Skye Terrier boy looking for his furever home!   This is a rare and unique breed, for which PPAR/AJL will be very selective with regards choosing an adopter.  Breed experience (or similar breed experience with a strong understanding of the breed) is required.  A fenced yard is also required.  Saturn will need an active family committed to getting him the exercise and mental stimulation, socialization and training that he needs to be his best self.  Saturn has been doing great in his foster home.  He is dog friendly, and good with older kids.  He is working on house training, and doing very well.

Saturn is only available for adoption in NJ or the Philadelphia area. He is up to date on vaccines.  He will be neutered at 6 months old, and a neuter deposit is required for adoption.

Saturn is a Benefactor dog:  but not in the traditional sense as set forth below.

Benefactor dogs have higher adoption fees due to a combination of reasons: they may be a purebred dog, small sized dogs that are in high demand, younger age, etc. They are quickly adopted, even with their higher fees. Their adoption fees allow them to act as “benefactors” to other dogs in our care such as sick or injured dogs, or senior dogs and heartworm positive dogs, dogs with heart problems or broken bones; many that require special medical care or procedures. This allows us to get these other dogs the medical care they need, and gives them a better chance at adoption and a loving home.

Saturn and his siblings came from a situation in which a breeder was getting out of the business.   After they arrived here they needed extensive vet care as they got over the gastro symptoms, which caused for the rescue to spend over $5500 at the emergency vet due to a parasite (giardia) which was causing them to sugar crash.  Three of the four needed an overnight stay to stabilize the sugar and the various imaging and testing the UPenn ER vets suggested.    Everything else was clear, but they just needed that extra care to get them over the hunp.   They are being treated for the parasite and they are now healthy, and our team nursing them back to health. They will have a clean bill of health, but their adoption fees will help support the rescue with the cost of their care.

This may cause some reaction.   However, between the rarity of the breed, the fact that, Skyes, when available, cost at least double the adoption fee, and the fact that the animal the all volunteer rescue’s other dogs will still end up subsidizing their adoptions because of the costs of conventional vetting and neuters, that these dogs should cover the majority of the expenses incurred in saving them.

While we wish we could have adopted these dogs out at a lesser fee, doing so could force us to forgo the next medical case that called to us.

More about this rescue

We have a passion for senior animals. To be able to save an animal from dying alone in a shelter, to give it a chance to live out its last days/months/years in a home with the proper care and love it deserves, instead of a cold shelter, is what drives us to keep going.

We obviously have financial needs that come with rescuing senior dogs, so we will be rescuing puppies and younger dogs as well so we are able to care for our seniors.
