My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Ghost and Roxy. Ghost is on the left and Roxy is on the right. They are new additions to Armac. We were contacted by a very nice lady named Christy. Her husband had been visiting a friend. While he was there the friend's neighbor came over and asked to borrow the friend's truck. The friend asked why and the guy told him he was going to take his two Akitas and dump them in the woods. At which point Christie's husband said oh no no. I will take them. And he did. He called Christy coming home to let her know that he had two dogs in the car with him. They already have a dog that's a Schnauzer poodle mix. The last time the husband brought a dog home unexpectedly it attacked their dog. So she was a little apprehensive. But these are really nice dogs. They got them just before Thanksgiving. And advertised them on NextDoor. She was appalled at the people who wanted these dogs. She realized that She was unable to vet the people the way they should be. She contacted her sister who does humane work in another state. Her sister suggested contacting Akita rescue. She originally contacted a different Akita rescue who told her to contact us because we were in her area. Christy has had some serious surgery lately and really needed to have the dogs gone because taking care of them was a lot for her in her current condition. I went to meet them with Annette, one of our volunteers, on Monday. These were two really, really nice dogs. Roxy has a little more energy, is probably the more dominant and outgoing of the two. Ghost was a little more reticent although he warmed up very quickly. I talked with Thomas and Alyssa, who are a foster home for us and they agreed to take Roxy the female. I had already made up my mind that I was going to keep Ghost and foster him here. But Annette called and let me know that she would be happy to foster him. He kind of won everybody's heart. We asked Christy's husband if he could get any more information from the previous owner reference vet records, anything, about the dogs. We got puppy pictures and a date of birth from the breeders paperwork. He sent them via text.

This is what her foster said about her: She was soooo good and they all just adore her at the vet. She has been incredible since she has been here. She does know a few commands, sit, shake and we are working on down. She is a counter surfer. Totally housebroken. Loves to come and go through the dog door (she is done being in heat). She is a bit of a puller on a lead and that is something we are working on too. She knows the command 'stop' and will do so immediately. She prefers to sleep in bed with people and we'll get her out of that soon, but in the meantime, she is a super sweet snuggle bug. Roxy will be available once she is spayed and has recovered.

Additional adoption info

* ARMAC normally will not place an Akita into a home that is more than 5 hours driving distance from the DC metro area.
* Prior experience with a large dominant breed is preferred, but not required.
* ARMAC normally will not place an Akita into a home with children under the age of 12 unless we are positive that the Akita adores children.
* A securely fenced yard or kennel run is preferred, but many adopted orphans have been excellent apartment dwellers.
* If you rent your home, ARMAC will require a copy of your lease to ensure that it allows for large dogs.
* Personal references are required and will be contacted.
* A vet reference is required if currently own pets or have owned pets in the past, please contact your vet and give them permission to speak with one of the ARMAC representatives.
* Please make sure you answer all questions on the adoption application, incomplete applications will not be processed.
* A home visit is required, all family members must be present.
* It is mandatory that all prospective adopters read our Information Package prior to adoption.
* The application process can take anywhere from one week to six weeks depending upon reference checks, etc.
* Adoption fee is required.

Akita Rescue Mid-Atlantic Coast, Inc. (ARMAC), founded in 1984, is one of the oldest Akita rescues in the United States. ARMAC is run solely by volunteers and all funding comes from private donations for the general public. ARMAC fulfills a wide variety of Akita needs in the greater Washington DC area. It educates and offers support to Akita owners, not only those who adopt from ARMAC, but all Akita owners regardless of where they got their Akita. But most importantly, ARMAC saves the lives of Akitas that would otherwise be euthanized in area shelters. All of ARMAC's fostered Akitas are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, micro chipped, tattooed and temperament evaluated prior to adoption. Potential adopters are screened carefully and thoroughly to ensure there is a perfect match between family and Akita. ARMAC's assistance doesn't stop at adoption. ARMAC offers support to its adoptive families throughout the lifetime of their Akita. ARMAC's goal is to avoid Akitas ever being given-up in the first place by educating the public about the breed, its history, and the many challenges that Akita ownership brings with it.
