My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Life hasn't always been kind to me, but I'm determined to find the love and happiness I deserve in my golden years. I come from a challenging past in Mozambique, where I was used as a guard dog on the side of a busy road. I wasn't given food or water often, and I endured cruelty that no dog should ever experience. Rocks were thrown at me, and I was beaten. The weight of a padlocked chain around my neck left me starving and emaciated, with my teeth worn away from trying to free myself.

Despite the trauma I endured, I was lucky enough to be rescued by compassionate individuals who saw the potential for a better life in me. It took many years, but I've learned to trust people again. I now give kisses, wag my tail at my favorite handlers, and even offer a paw for treats. While I may be particular with human friends, my caregivers have patiently waited for me to heal and understand my triggers, which still haunt me from my painful past. They love me for who I am, scars and all, and I've found comfort in their care.

I'm on a quest to find a kind and compassionate family who will love me selflessly. I understand that I may not be the easiest dog to get to know, so I need patient and experienced individuals who are willing to invest time and love into building a bond with me.

It may take many visits to determine if I'm the right fit for your home. I require an experienced home where my new family understands my past and is willing to work with me to overcome my fears and anxieties. My triggers from my past may still affect me, so it's important for my new family to be patient and empathetic.

If you're willing to open your heart to a senior dog with a traumatic history, you'll find a loyal companion in me. I may take time to fully trust you, but when I do, I promise to repay your kindness with endless love and gratitude.

Additional adoption info

Due to the high volume of applicants, we are only able to move forward with families that are ready to adopt now. If you aren’t ready to adopt now, please apply when you are ready to welcome a dog into your home. After your initial appointment, once the adoption has been approved, we will require the dog to be picked up within one week unless we determine otherwise.

Our hope is that all homes are a forever home, however we understand that circumstances can change, and that sometimes it just isn't the right fit. Whether you discover this three days after the adoption, or three years after the adoption, we will always welcome our dogs back with open arms. Their well-being is our top concern.

All of our dogs are spayed or neutered, microchipped, examined by a vet, dewormed, given flea and tick prevention, groomed

Our adoption fees:

Under 1 year old (11 months or less) - $950
1-7 years old - $800
8+ years old - $500
Sanctuary - $50
Palliative* - $50
Special Needs* - $50
Bonded pairs - 30% off the total price

*For Palliative and Special Needs dogs we will discuss on a case by case basis what Dog Tales will cover financially, if applicable
