My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Miss Effie has the nose of a bloodhound ... in the body of a terrier mix (maybe Lhasa Apso?)! She absolutely loves to eat and have special snacks so if you adopt her be prepared to give her lots of awesome treats! Her foster Mama got her a snuffle mat where she can find hidden hotdog slices and she thinks she is in Heaven :) She has even uncovered long forgotten chew sticks that the resident doggie buried in beds and blankets.

Miss Effie is a lovely senior girl around 14#s that looking for a soft warm bed or lap where she can cuddle! She is blind and mostly deaf but gets around just fine. She can always find you and does like to be near her people! She will whine softly if she wakes up and you have moved, but otherwise she is very quiet and doesn't bark.

Miss Effie has some medical issues but she is worth the little effort it takes to make her comfortable. She has a cough due to a collapsed trachea, which is quite common on small breeds and seniors such as her. It doesn't seem to bother her and there is nothing you would need to do. She does have dry eye and needs to have eye drops daily but she takes them like a champ! Recently, she was also started on thyroid medicine - the good news is that if you put it in a pill pocket or a hot dog, she will happily eat the small pill! She also has some mammary tumors which don't seem to bother her.

Miss Effie had a neglectful first home, but she hasn't let that sour her disposition. She adores people! She likes being petted and held. Her heart was broken when she was turned into a shelter at 12 years old so let's mend it by giving her a new, better home! She is SO ready to love again! Miss Effie does fantastic with other dogs and cats.

When you take her outside to go potty, she always goes. You don't have to wait long either - she knows it is time to do her business. She does also have some accidents in the house though so when she has to go, she has to go - typically whenever she wakes up. She needs a family that is patient. She would not do well crated and prefers to have free reign of her home so she can find her favorite spots to nap & be near you.

Miss Effie still enjoys playing with toys too - especially if you make them squeak for her - it is one of the things she can still hear! She has such a sweet disposition and we want her to have all the security and special attention that she deserves. If you think you are a good match for her please message us. She is currently fostered in Waco, Texas. To have your home considered for adoption, read about our adoption process or fees, and find out about interstate transport (dogs only), please visit our website.

More about this rescue

Long Way Home was created to provide the last stop for animals displaced from their homes, deemed "unadoptable" by other rescues, or that need a level of care their previous owners or other shelters are unable or unwilling to provide.
