My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Anita is a very special girl that requires a very special adopter.

A rural mail carrier became aware of 2 young stray dogs, one that from a distance appeared to be very seriously injured. It was soon discovered Anita was trying to protect her dying brother Archie. Several days after their rescue, sadly, Archie crossed the rainbow bridge. Anita displayed unwavering loyalty to and was deeply bonded to Archie.
We were fortunate to place her into a loving foster home where she befriended a shy, male dog who had also experienced neglect and abuse. Despite her rough start to life,  Anita is an amazingly loving, nurturing dog.

In November Anita started displaying symptoms suggestive of a severe infection. Multiple veterinary visits and hospitalizations later, this innocent girl has been diagnosed with hepatozoonosis, a rare tick-borne disease often missed by veterinarians. After several months of various treatments we are happy to report Anita’s body is responding positively to medication.  However,  it is necessary for her to remain on this antibiotic therapy for a minimum of 2 years. The cost of this medication and any required monitoring has been generously sponsored/donated to help ensure Anita will always receive everything needed to manage this treatable disease.

It is certain that Anita will bring immeasurable love and joy to her forever home and family. She has already suffered too much pain and grief in her young life. But over and over she has proven she is a fighter, a survivor!

Anita is 11 months old and is a terrific size weighing a perfect 42lbs. She is living happily in her foster home with 5 other dogs and a cat. She is great with kids too! One thing we have been repeatedly told about Anita is that she is wicked smart!

We recognize Anita’s medical needs require a higher level of commitment. But what an incredible opportunity to make a difference in her life and share the journey of this sweet, precious, very deserving soul.

Anita is spayed, up to date on vaccines, microchipped and has received a ProHeart injection.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

Adoption is a four part process.

Application: You will be required to submit general information along with personal and vet references.

Home visit: Potential adopters will receive a home visit by one of our members.

Meet -n- Greet: All family members (fur babies included) must meet the foster parent and pup they wish to adopt.

Here at Dirt Road Doggies Rescue, each adoption contribution is a flat rate per dog. We do not adjust this rate based on the "popularity" of a dog. We believe every dog is worthy of an owner that sees the value in them. Each adoption contribution is used to cover the expenses incurred for that dog and other dogs in our program.

Go meet their pets

Dirt Road Doggies Rescue, INC is located in the quaint town of Gillsville, in the foothills of the Georgia Mountains, just south of Gainesville. Our rescues are fostered in loving homes located in Hall, Jackson, and neighboring counties.

More about this rescue

We are a small canine rescue group located in Northeast Georgia that works tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate, fully vet, and re-home faithful dogs that have been tossed out of cars onto rural roads. We are a registered, 501c3 tax deductible Non Profit Rescue and we are licensed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture

All dogs in our program have been previously reported to animal control to ensure they were not lost pups who had a family diligently looking for them. We do not turn a dog away due to breed, health concerns, or age. It is our goal to keep these dogs out of animal shelters, thus saving their lives and providing more time to the dogs already in shelters to find their forever family.
