My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This cat is part of our shelter outreach program where we take pets from overcrowded shelters in hopes of finding them a forever home here! We generally do not have much background info on them. They are all up to date on vaccines, spayed/neutered and microchipped.  FIV/Felv negative.

Update 3/7/24 -

After monitoring Benjamin we notice some GI upset and increased urination.  We repeated bloodwork and found that he is diabetic.  To mange his diabetes we changed his Rx food and started him on 2 units of insulin once a day.  This can change since he's still early in his diagnosis and we are in the stage of monitoring his blood glucose levels and conducting blood glucose curves.  We hope that we see significant improvement in his GI health, decrease urination and weight gain with the treatment of his diabetes. We have already seen positive changes in his behavior.  Benedict is more social, meowing more (he was so quiet) and wanting to explore more.

10 years old.  Transferred from an overcrowded NJ shelter due to his desperate need for a dental.

Sadly this poor was not well cared for at all.   We took care of Benedict dental needs and now he has a whopping 3 teeth left!  We are hoping with some better nutrition and a lot of TLC his coat and spirits will improve.  He is now ready to find a family to live out his golden years with.  He is a quiet boy and a little shy when first meeting him.  With some petting and brushing you can get his purr motor running.  He will be a great couch buddy.

*On Rx food.  Eats Hill's W/D dry and Hills K/D canned.

*Per JSAC policy, puppies and kittens under 6 months will not be adopted to families with children under the age of 6 years.

Adoption Process

Our friendly, knowledgable team of staff and volunteers would be glad to give you a tour of the shelter and discuss whether one of our furry friends is the right match for your home.

The JSAC has careful policies on the placement of young animals, dominant breed dogs (Rottweilers, Shepherds, Akitas, etc). Due to our lifelong return policy we prefer to adopt our pets locally, so we don't adopt out of state. We prefer homes in the region so that we can be a resource for the animals and their adopters. These policies and procedures are in place to protect everyone involved and are very common when rehoming animals, whether through a shelter or a rescue group.

We do not have "same day" adoptions. Rather, an application for an animal is reviewed to ensure that 1) the home has taken good care of their other animals * 2) The animal is permitted in the home and 3) that it is the right home for the right animal (choosing dog that likes cats if cats already in household, etc..). Typically this process takes 24-48 hours. If a dog application is approved and there are other dogs in the home, we have the two (or more) dogs meet; many times if necessary.

More about this shelter

Jersey Shore Animal Center is committed to the care of unwanted, abandoned, sick animals and to the adoption of these animals to responsible, loving homes. To that end, veterinary care is provided as needed, medication and inoculations are given and neutering/spaying is done prior to adoption unless the animal's health or age precludes this procedure.

In addition, a compassionate staff tends to providing for each animal's physical and emotional needs, taking care to keep each one sheltered, clean, well-fed and socialized.
