My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

The big ol’ pupper!

Hi pals! I am Eli, the social media star made popular on TAP IG. I am a 10 year old, 75 lbs, male neutered German Shepherd and I am a certified good boy! I was pulled from the Downey shelter from a Euth list and I am so grateful to TAP for that. I had a benign tumor on my head, and thanks to surgery, I no longer have to hide it with a hat. I am working on a ear treatment to clear the odor and make me all good. My foster mama says that I have been so good and already fully bathroom and leash trained. She feels that at some point I had a home and was trained. I wish I could talk and tell what happened, but here we are and we will write our new chapter together.

I may be older, but I am an energetic pupper at heart! I am super playful and go hard! Once tuckered out, I settle for cozy naps. I love chasing balls and toys. I am a true shepherd and every bit loyal and protective. You don’t need to be afraid if you are walking me at night, cuz I got ya! If at home, I want to see you and make sure you never go to the bathroom alone! If left at home, I will wait for you patiently by the door. Play and play more is my mantra and as long as I see toys, I will toss them. Regarding dogs, a slow and patient introduction is needed because I do have strong alpha tendencies. My foster mama is teaching me not to get insecure and cutting off my guarding behavior with cuddles, toys or food. I have improved a great deal, but management will help. I am unsure about kids or cats right now.

I would thrive with a playful, fun and loving family who will love me loads! I can be mellow if toys are not around and can keep us all entertained too. I will play hard, and sleep hard! I’d love to be the sidekick to my partner and be involved in daily happenings around the house. I like to be around my family and would like companionship. I can be super mellow, but I also run like a puppy when given the chance.  I’d be great for someone that wants a playful dog but doesn’t necessarily want a dog that needs a ton of activity like hiking, swimming, etc. If you think we can toss that ball into the sunset, let’s hang out!

I had apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma (this is a malignancy with the potential for regrowth and metastasis). Although there is no guarantee of cure for this tumor type because of often narrow excisions (given the location, as in my case), and propensity to spread, it is also hard to know if additional therapy is needed, but my prognosis is expected to be good, especially given my age! A rectal exam is recommended every 3-6 months for the first 2 years (and then yearly, most relapses happen in the first 2 years) along with a focused ultrasound of the lymph nodes in the back part of the abdomen. He is currently eating  Royal Canin Ultamino diet/Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets HA Hydrolyzed Vegetarian Canine Formula (~$115.00/~$95.00 per bag, price depending on where purchased and market value). to help manage my ear allergies. Currently taking Prednisone course (~$5.00 per course) to also help with allergies.

My adoption fee is $200 and that includes spaying/neutering, shots, and microchip. If you want to take me home, please fill out the form on the website here: https://theanimalpad.org/adoption-application/

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

We prioritize local San Diego applicants. We do not provide transport of dogs to other states, and don't allow the dogs to fly in the cargo of the plane.
Our adoption process from start to finish, involves 3 standard forms, and 2 situational.
All potential applicants must be capable of providing their adopted pet with routine and emergency veterinary care (yearly health checks, keeping vaccinations current, heartworm/flea preventatives, and immediate care in the event the animal is sick or injured). They are required to license their pet, and keep an identification tag on their pet at all times.
All applicants must agree to a home check, and provide us with a veterinary reference, or personal references if you're a first-time pet owner. Our home checks are not to invade the privacy of the applicants, we do this to ensure the pet is going into a safe home. We do not discriminate against non-homeowners, or those living in apartments, condos, or otherwise.
Our adoption fees vary from $150-1000.
Applicants must agree in writing that if for any reason they are unable to keep or care for their pet, the pet will be surrendered back to our rescue and not re-homed, turned over to a shelter, pound, rescue, new owner, sold, etc.

More about this rescue

Overview
The Animal Pad is a nonprofit, all-breed dog rescue devoted to saving the lives of dogs facing euthanasia at high kill animal shelters and off the streets of Mexico. We rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home locally.

We are dedicated to animal advocacy, and educating dog owners on the importance of spaying and neutering their pets. We are a foster based rescue, and rely heavily on the kindness and generosity of the amazing people who make donations toward the rescue and care of the dogs we save.

We are always looking for adopters, fosters, donations, volunteers, etc.. Please let us know if you would like to get involved by contacting us at one of the email addresses found below.
