My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Please contact Destiny Sibert (DestinyS@luckydoganimalrescue.org) for more information about this pet.

MATTHEW

Male
Chihuahua and terrier mix
18 pounds

6 years old as of December 2023

Small dogs get grabbed and picked up and hugged and squeezed by people who wouldn't dream of doing that to much bigger pups with much bigger teeth. Matthew didn't want to go the Italian mastiff route (way too drooly and undignified), but he figured out a way to get the respect and reverence due him: Transmogrify into a cat.

That worked halfway. Outside, he's a small, cute dog. Inside, he is all cat.

You know how you don't just reach out and try to pat a cat on the head? You sit there and wait for the cat to come to you. You don't move a muscle as the cat investigates you. Not even when it starts nudging you with its head. But when it starts rubbing its body heartily against you - that's when you lift a finger and oh so gently start stroking it. You watch carefully to make sure you still have consent to pet as you continue caressing it. Once it backs off - you back off too!

You know how you keep respecting the cat's space and then one day the cat comes to sit in your lap, purring, and all is good with the world? And then the cat is always yours, forever and ever?

That is Matthew.

You know how cats sit blocking a hallway or staircase, just daring a dog to try and come through? And the dog tries to sidle through without making eye contact, sideways, to avoid the cat's wrath?

That is Matthew too. His domain is his alone.

Matthew is truly a sweetie. Right now he finds many things intimidating - we don't know what he went through before arriving at the shelter. But he is oh so eager to have a space where he can trust and love. He needs patient humans who will set him up for success in a quiet home. The reward? The earned love and loyalty of an animal like that - there's nothing like it.

“What greater gift than the love of a cat?” — Charles Dickens

Will Matthew be your gift to yourself?

Gets Along With:   Adult humans! Due to his breed mix and personality, Matthew is not well suited for a home with children under the age of 12. He would be best as the only pet in the home at this time.

Currently Living at:  DC area foster home

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

The adoption process begins when you submit an adoption application either online or at an adoption event. The individual responsible for the dog you are interested in adopting - a position we call the “adoption coordinator” - will then set up a time to discuss your application over the telephone. The adoption coordinator will check your vet reference to make sure all current and past pets were kept up-to-date with their shots and medical care. The adoption coordinator will also set up a home visit with one of our trained volunteers. That individual will come to your home to ensure that it is a safe environment, to confirm that everyone in the home is on board with adopting a dog, and to discuss any other questions you may have about dog adoption!

Our adoption events are held each weekend. A schedule of times and locations can be found at www.luckydoganimalrescue.org.
