Paws

Hello! I’m Winston Churchill, an adult French Bulldog who is a total love bug if I do say so myself! Ok foster mom says so too! My foster family also says that I’m handsome (TOTALLY TRUE) with a loving and playful personality…also true! I am most happy when nestling into my people (it’s my comfort zone!), and I am an absolute pro at couch cuddles!! The truth is, I crave love, affection, and safety, and my biggest dream is to be YOUR fur-ever companion!

In addition to cuddling, I enjoy stuffy toys (the sturdy kind!), squeaker balls, and I also love chewing on Nylabones. Toys & bones aside, if you REALLY want to know the way to my heart bring on the belly rubs, head scratches, food (did I mention I LOVE breakfast?!), and treats! In fact, if treats are involved, I will undoubtedly master any trick or skill! Speaking of…I’ve now learned to “sit”, “touch”, “spin” and “leave it”…that last one being important as sometimes I think my poop looks like a snack! Hee, hee!! Don’t judge!

Anyway, I sleep like an angel in my crate if my people are nearby, but I don’t like being left alone and will bark, bark, and bark some more if I am left in that thing with no one around…I mean seriously is wherever you’re going SO important that you can’t take me with you!?! I just love my people so much and don’t want to be without them! But, my foster fam is starting to trust me being outside of the crate for short test-runs when they leave. They told me they can see everything on the doggy camera, so I’ve been on my best behavior and just look out the window quietly waiting for them to return! With that said, it would be good if you’re home with me lots and that my forever home didn’t have shared walls.

Moving right along, I have not met any cats, but I think I’d be ok with them if they keep to themselves LOL; I don’t like a lot of commotion and I’m working on building up my confidence, so I think a household without kids would be best for me. However, I have met lots of dog friends now and LOVE playing with my two resident dog sibs!

The warm spring weather has really brought out the best in me! I love walks at the park (although when we walk near our house, I don’t understand why we walk AWAY from all the good things already at home!). I am potty trained on a schedule, and I finally worked up the courage to go down a couple steps all by myself to our wonderfully fenced-in yard (stairs are scary to me – but I can now do one or two!).  I don’t always do my “business” on walks, so a fenced-in backyard would be a great option for me!

I’m still learning to trust people who aren’t “my people” if you know what I mean! So when we venture out to new environments, I put on my shy-guy face. And when friends and family come to visit the house, it takes a while for me to warm up to them. But foster mom is working on showing me that the big world isn’t so scary! In fact, I love to hang out at Bachman’s and dog-friendly breweries…I’m a “watch and observe” type of guy right now – but when it comes to treats… I’ll gladly take those from anyone!!

In the end, I am an angel of a boy who is simply looking for YOU…a patient, unconditionally loving fur-ever family that will NEVER give up on me. Will you please be my heart? I promise I will love you more than you could EVER imagine!

ALL my love, Winston Churchill

*Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders. Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared. Each dog receives basic grooming when coming into rescue, but for some dogs they have not received grooming attention until recently and grooming may be required shortly after adoption. This will be at the adopter’s expense, so we encourage you to research the breed and be prepared for grooming expenses. Underdog cannot guarantee hypoallergenic or non-shedding qualities of any dogs in our rescue. Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. In turn, they require another companion dog and/or a fenced in yard in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog whose bio states those needs and do not currently have them, please understand that your home might not be the right fit. Please use the filter on our Adoptable Dogs page to find the perfect match for your home.

Bulldogs are a member of the Brachycephalic breed and therefore have a host of health issues that may arise.  Because these dogs are new into our rescue, health issues in the future may arise that we are not aware of.  Some of these issues are allergies, eye issues, yeast infections, interdigital cysts, slipped disks in their back, breathing problems, among a host of others that can occur at any time or when seasons change. While breed experience is not required, we encourage you to thoroughly research the breed and its financial, medical, and environmental needs to be sure the breed is a good fit for you and your family.  It is estimated that the average bulldog owner spends $2,000 per year on medical needs.       In addition to normal pre adoption surgeries, Winston Churchill also had surgery on hisnares and soft palate to improve the quality of his breathing. This is reflected within her adoption fee.

Bulldogs are one of the most expensive dogs to own, maintain, and rescue and our adoption fees reflect such expenses.  The application process for bulldogs usually moves quite quickly as they are a popular breed, so we ask that adopters do research and be prepared for adoption at the time you submit your application.  They are happy, goofy, playful characters and we are excited you are taking the first steps into rescuing one!

This dog requires an application fee.  This fee must be paid within 24 hours or your application will be considered void.    We will not review or contact applicants that have not completed the payment portion. Bulldog Applications will be responded to within 5 business days, after receipt of the application fee.  Please understand that paying the fee does not guarantee you will be approved to adopt the bulldog. Our goal is place bulldogs in homes that are suited for their individual needs. You may be willing and able to provide a great home, but if it doesn’t meet the specific needs of the bulldog, we will not approve your application.

ADOPTION EVENTS:

Adoption events are updated at the top of each dogs animals' as their foster home signs up. Check back for updates on which events they will be attending. If an event is not listed within their bio above, the animal is not planning to attend.  Please understand that all of our pets are in volunteer foster homes and sometimes "life" happens and the foster family cannot make it to their scheduled adoption event. If you are traveling from a far distance to meet a specific animal, please understand we cannot guarantee event attendance. We recommend filling out an application and we will set up a private appointment. Private appointments are only scheduled after an application is submitted and approved.

ADOPTION PROCEDURE:

The first step in our process is to complete an online adoption application on our website:
Note: In most circumstances Underdog Rescue will only adopt within 60 miles of Minneapolis, MN.
All of our foster animals can be seen by appointment with an approved adoption application. Contact us at http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/contact-us/ if you have further questions.

FOSTER CARE:

All of our animals are fostered in individual homes or doggie daycare facilities. While they are in our care, they are part of our families and given lots of love. We work on training, crate-training and socialization prior to adoption, but each bio is written by the foster as they see them, in their home. Each animal's behavior is evaluated and we have a sense of its temperament and personality, but it cannot be guaranteed. We look for adopters who will give each animal the wonderful life and permanent home that he or she deserves in time and with patience.  If you have an interest and ability to be a foster home, please visit our website  www.underdogrescuemn.com/foster-applications  and fill out a foster application.

NUTRITION:

Nutrition is vital to the rehabilitation and life-long health of our pets.  All of our foster animals are fed a premium diet such as NutriSource, Canidae, Orijen, Nature's Variety, Fromm, Pure Vita, Stella and Chewy's, Primal, or balanced raw diet.  All adopters are required to continue providing premium diets for the life of the animal.

Additional adoption info

Step one is making sure you read through all of the information provided at https://underdogrescuemn.com/adoptionprocess/ and on our FAQ’s page before applying.

Step two begins after your application has been submitted. Our coordinators will review your application to ensure that you and the pet you are applying for is a good match. The application is where you get to tell us about yourself! Please answer the questions thoroughly. We look at all of the details and then weigh those details with what we know the dogs need. For example, many of our dogs come from commercial breeding facilities. Some of those dogs have a little trouble adjusting to life in a new home, so they require another dog to teach them “how to be a dog”. Not all of our dogs have this need, but some do, and that’s something we will take into consideration.

You will receive a response from us, via email, within 1-3 business days.

*Please note, puppy applications require one week review time and payment of the application fee.

If you are considering adopting one of our pets, keep in mind that we have several policies regarding placement.

We only adopt to homes within 60 miles of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Only on a case by case basis do we place female dogs in homes with current female dogs.
We will not place our pets in homes with unaltered animals.
We have a strict NO DECLAW policy, where adopters must agree to never declaw adopted cats. For more information on declawing and its alternatives, please visit www.declawing.com
We have a lifetime commitment to our animals, all adopters must agree to return their pets to us if placement is not deemed successful.
We strongly encourage continued socialization and formal obedience training for all dogs under the age of eight.
If you have children younger than 5 years, and do not already have a canine in your home, understand that adding a dog or cat will be like adding a permanent 2 year old to your responsibilities. For this reason, we will only place our pets in homes with children younger than 5 on a case-by-case basis. Keep in mind that completing an adoption contract means you understand that all adoption fees are non-refundable.

Go meet their pets

Our dogs are available to meet at our adoption events. As fosters RSVP to events, we will update the dog’s profile to reflect those events. However, sometimes “life happens” and fosters are unable to make it, or unable to RSVP ahead of time. We recommend attending events and meeting our pets to find the right one to match your home and lifestyle.

If you are serious about an individual pet on our website, please read about our Adoption Process, and complete an application. Upon approval, a private meet and greet may be scheduled.

We do not schedule private meetings until you have applied and been approved to meet the individual pet.
