My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Dazzle
This beautiful young pup Dazzle, and her sisters Hermione and Misty, have had a very rough beginning. They’d been starved and uncared for most all of their young life. Thank goodness they had each other. Since arriving, we’ve been working with each of the sisters to build their confidence and show them kindness.
Dazzle is thought to be a cattle dog mix, given her beautiful blue eyes. Sadly, right now her eyes are mixed with pain and uncertainty. They bore through your heart, making you want to do everything you can to take her pain away. She is small in size and our vet expects that she and her sisters will remain small. She is about six months old and just precious. She’s not what we’d call brave, but she is trying so hard. Our staff and volunteers spend time with her to show her that hoomans can be kind and gentle. Dazzle, after a bit of time spent with someone, will lean into the kindness and roll over for belly rubs and some snuggles. To see her cower initially is heartbreaking though. We can only imagine the scary and uncaring world she’s experienced
until now. Dazzle loves her sisters and other dogs. She and our recent rescue, Dot, love playing with each other. Dot’s calm and easy-going personality works great for Dazzle and brings her out of her shyness.
Dazzle and her sisters will make for wonderful and loyal dogs, but the person who adopts will need to have infinite patience to meet Dazzle where she is. We are sure that in a little bit of time Dazzle will be able to put her previous life behind her and embrace her new world. Dazzle will need a fenced yard to safely run in. Dazzle would do well with another dog in the home, perhaps one of her sisters, or a calm and friendly confident dog that she can learn from.
We hate to think of Dazzle’s life as a tiny puppy in this great big world, not given food or water and certainly no love. But she is loved now and we’re doing whatever we can to help her erase her past. Perhaps you can be a part of her future and give her a happy home filled with love.
If interested in Dazzle, please submit an application online at:
https://www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org/page/dog-adoption-application
Once an application is submitted online, you will receive an email saying your application has
been successfully submitted. If you don’t receive this email within 24 hours, please check to
make sure all application fields were completed or please call our shelter at 706-865-4135. All
adopters must complete an approval process which involves a reference check with
current/recent vet and a brief home visit if located in the immediate area. We do permit out of
state adoptions. Adopters MUST come to the shelter to transport their new family member
home. We do not ship nor do we transport them to their new homes. Adoption policies and
application procedures are detailed at the shelter website: http://smithgallhumanesociety.org/
under tab All Adoptable Animals.
Charles Smithgall Humane Society (CSHS) is a No kill shelter. Animals in our care remain safe
with us until adopted. Resident animals are primarily owner relinquished and also accepted from
local Animal Control. The facility usually is operating at capacity with a list of animals waiting for
space to open.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

Our adoption process begins with the submission of an application which is used to gather information and initiate conversation with the adopting person/family. The form also assists us with assessing the environment for suitability and safety in the placement of our residents. The application is the first step in the approval process, followed by veterinarian reference check, landlord approval confirmation if relevant and a home visit which may be done physically or virtually depending on the distance from the shelter. The approval process can be initiated either before or after a visit to the shelter to visit our residents. The application for dogs is located on our Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/smithgallhumanesociety/photos/a.984873858223547.1073741865.548822128495391/1271213192922944/?type=3&theater . For cat application, go to: https://www.facebook.com/smithgallhumanesociety/photos/a.984873858223547.1073741865.548822128495391/1271223856255211/?type=3&theater . The forms will be automated for online submission through a new website currently under construction with an anticipated launch date of no later than Nov 2016. Requirements for adoption are specific to the needs of the animal in addition to standard checks for safety issues. Adopters must come to the shelter once approved to take their adopted pet home. We do not ship nor do we transport. Submitting the form is neither a guarantee of adoption nor an entitlement to "first come, first served" in the selection process of safely and appropriately placing our residents. Decision to approve/not approve an adopter(s) is based on the needs of the dog, not the needs of the adopter. The application should be downloaded before printing. The completed form can be returned through Facebook Messages, emailing to: smithgallhumanesociety@windstream.net or delivery to the shelter. The process usually takes 1 to 3 business days but can be slowed by not completing all of the questions, difficulty in reaching people relevant to approval and scheduling a home visit. Our residents must be returned to us at any point in time if the adoption is no longer suitable/safe for the pet or circumstances have changed to where a new home is needed. A contract must be signed to complete the adoption process. Standard fees for dogs are $100 and for cats $85. Some fees are subsidized in various amounts as low as $25 (minimum allowed subsidized fee) for dogs and $20 (minimum allowed subsidized fee) for cats . All of our animals are spay/neutered, have age appropriate vaccines and are free of internal parasites. Dogs are tested for heart worms and put on monthly prevention. Cats are tested for FIV/FeLV.

More about this shelter

Charles Smithgall Humane Society (est 1994) is a small no-kill shelter which utilizes our adoption center, social media and offsite events to seek safe and appropriate homes for our residents. Our mission is to provide safe sanctuary and all standard preventive care procedures and veterinary services to the dogs and cats of our local communities Intakes are primarily owner relinquishments with some animals accepted from animal control when space is available. All potential adopters must be evaluated through our approval process. We are funded 100% by donations and fundraising events. With the exception of 2 kennel managers, our operations are totally managed with volunteers. We are always in need of donations and volunteers. We appreciate the sharing of our pets on social media as most of our adoptions have resulted through the resources of the internet.
