Meet Oscar! Oscar is a super chill, relaxed 9-year-old 78lb. yellow labrador retriever that was turned in by a homeless person in December. It seems Oscar has spent some time on the streets and has likely been exposed to a lot of different experiences. None of those, however, have affected his awesome and loving demeanor. Oscar is super friendly and very sweet and will make a great companion for someone looking to hang out with a cool dog.
Like most labs, he has a strong tail wag and loves to greet you with something in his mouth. When he first arrived at his foster home, we weren’t sure what to expect from a dog that came from being homeless. But Oscar has proven himself a happy-go-lucky houseguest that is potty trained and crate trained. He happily went into a crate on night 1 of arriving at his foster home and he would gladly still go in if asked; however, his foster felt Oscar was OK not necessarily being in a crate and now Oscar sleeps comfortably on a dog bed in the bedroom of his choice. Lucky dog!
Oscar loves to play fetch and plays well with toys. He loves having something in his mouth and he always carries his toys around. He’s such a lab after all!
He has been living with a small dog in his foster home and the two get along just fine. They don’t necessarily play together but they co-exist peacefully. Although the retriever in Oscar does get a bit of jealousy if the resident dog is getting all the attention. It is unknown how Oscar would react to a cat. He does bark at the squirrels in the backyard, but he quickly corrects when told “no”. He really is just a mellow easy-going dog!
Oscar seems to have more of an affinity to the men in the household than the women. He whines a bit when his foster dad leaves the house, but the whining doesn’t last long, and he quickly calms. He shows no destructive or stressful tendencies when left alone. And he is oh so happy to greet you when you arrive home!
Oscar enjoys his walks and can pull a bit, but he learns quickly not to so walks are a great experience for him and for you.
Oscar does know some commands and will sit for you. Yet at 9 years old, he’s a bit stiff and sitting is a bit of a chore. He also likes riding in a car, but he will need a little help getting in and out. He can also go up some stairs but again, may take him longer due to his more mature hips.
If you are looking for a sweet low to medium energy dog that will be so happy to spend his days with you, then look no further because Oscar is the dog for you. He is really easy going and just a love!
My Ideal Home
Oscar’s ideal home will be with someone that wants to play fetch in the yard a lot and will enjoy the company of an easy-going dog during down times. He prefers the males in the home and has likely lived with males most of his life. Small dogs are OK but don’t expect Oscar to play with them. Kids are probably OK, but Oscar has not been around young children in his foster home. He is very gentle. So, if you want a dog that will be so excited to see you and will lay at your feet after playing, then Oscar is who you are looking for.
