My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Ralph is an 8-year-old long haired Chihuahua mix. He is a big lover, and nothing makes him happier than to cuddle up with you on a nice warm blanket on the couch. He loves to follow you around the house like a little puppy and will happily follow you outside. To Ralph, being with his person 24/7 is what life’s all about.

Ralph would prefer being the only pet in the household. He previously lived with other dogs his size and he currently lives with a very sweet Shih Tzu and cat, but Ralph can be a bit jealous and really prefers to be the center of attention.

Not an overly active pup, Ralph enjoys spending a significant amount of time sleeping on the couch. He is a little hard of hearing and can startle easily if he doesn’t know you are there. Being the drama king that he is, he does prefer that he be lifted off the couch even though he is perfectly capable of jumping off. lol

He recently had dental work which removed the last of his 3 remaining teeth. He eats wet food but can eat a little dry kibble. His foster mom reports that he is a very messy eater, pulling his food out of his dish. He’ll look up at you as if to say, “hey, you would do the same if you didn’t have any teeth!”.

Ralph is a heartworm survivor. He successfully completed heartworm treatment last month. He and another dog from the same family were diagnosed when we pulled them from the shelter in September of last year. He did very well and tested negative in January. We do recommend that his adopter keep up with heartworm preventatives and do annual heartworm testing.

With all our rescues, Ralph has been fully vaccinated, neutered, and microchipped. He has gone through our Senior Animal Wellness Program which provides a more thorough exam due to his senior status. He has additionally been tested for tick fever, had a urinalysis and x-rays. Medical records will be provided upon adoption.

Additional adoption info

The adoption process is simple:

1. The first step is to complete the Adoption Application. Once we have received your application, you will be contacted within 48 hours. We are located in Phoenix, Arizona and do not do out-of-state adoptions.

2. Your application will then be assigned to a volunteer that will schedule a home visit. The home visit allows us to get a better understanding of your family and your lifestyle so you meet dogs that fit your family. All members of your family must be present for the home visit.

3. Once you are approved, the foster home will contact you. Our dogs are all in foster homes, so you will need to be an approved adopter before meeting any of our rescue dogs.

4. The foster home will schedule a meet and greet. All members of your family must be present for the meet and greet as well as all pets residing in the home. We want to make sure everyone gets along.

5. You have 24 hours to make your decision. Once you have met your potential new family member, you have 24 hours to make your decision. You will need to contact the foster home with your decision within that time frame, otherwise, the foster home will contact the next family 24 hours after you meet the dog.

6. An Adoption Agreement will be completed and you will receive all the medical and vaccination information.

7. The adoption fee is collected.

8. You get to take your new family member home!

More about this rescue

Since 2013, C.A.R.E. Medical Fund has provided emergency medical funding and assistance to companion animals in our shelters. What would normally deem a shelter pet as unadoptable due to treatable illness or age, we provide the funding for life-saving procedures that give hope. Our rescue is dedicated to helping homeless pets in our community find their second chance.
