Hello! Thank you so much for your interest in Amos. Unfortunately like many in rescue, Amos's story has a sad and difficult beginning. He was taken away from a hoarding situation where he had to fight for food and general resources. Even though he was a puppy he was full of parasites and worms, and was extremely underweight. He was then sent to a local animal shelter where he deteriorated even further due to the stress of the environment. That is when he came into rescue with Ruff Start and started the healing journey. He has healed physically, now he is learning to heal mentally. He is curious and eager to learn about the world but he is shy and needs to do it at his pace. As he was not given the opportunities to explore as a puppy, everything seems new to him- even mundane household things. He absolutely loves any and all foods, so that helps a lot with his confidence and getting him to explore new places. He is very sweet, loves toys and anything that squeaks, and he is quickly coming out of his shell after his latest move. He keeps his kennel clean and other than some barking when first going in for the night, he is very quiet. Crazy considering he is part hound. He does need slow intros to people (he is a runner not a fighter) so apartments are not ideal as he finds the shared hallways scary. He does get along with dogs well but he is rude with his play style (not aggressive, just in your face) so a dog that is more laid back would be good for him. He hasn't met a cat other than through a fence and he seemed just a bit too interested, so we assume cats are not ideal for him. Also, due to his shy nature, we do ask that children in the home are older than 12 years old so they can be calm and give him the space he may need in the beginning. Give him the time and patience he needs to gain his confidence, and you will have the most loyal, loving dog as a companion. Did I mention handsome too?
