My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Socialization/training: Mavroula is not treat motivated, at least not so far, making it more challenging to train her. She has learned her name, and most often comes when called. We are working on “come” and “sit”. A most endearing behavior is when she sees leashes come out, she sits perfectly still for you to put her leash and harness on her. We also practice “wait” when opening the gate to go on a walk. She has had no accidents since I have had her. She likes other dogs and most people. It took Mavroula some time to be friendly and relaxed with my dogs. She now lies sleeping near both my dogs and likes to be close to them.

Crate trained: She is crate trained, but she doesn’t usually go into the crate. She also has a separate space in my house where she eats and goes when I leave the house.

Leash trained: She walks well on a leash with or without other dogs. She doesn’t have a lot of practice walking on a leash, but she does not pull. She also runs well on a leash and is an almost perfect running companion. However, due to her inexperience she sometimes gets under your feet.

Activity Level: Mavroula needs a few walks a day to be happy, but she does not need to run extensively as do many English Setters.

Fence: A fenced yard is required for Marvoula. She needs at least a small backyard to run around in, and this yard needs to have a solid fence, at least 5 feet high.

Behavior:  Mavroula came to me as a very anxious and fearful dog. She walked around with her tail tightly tucked between her rear legs. As she has become more confident and comfortable, her tail now comes out. She now walks around the house happily. Mavroula is a surprisingly easy dog. She is quiet, very gentle, and independent. She sometimes buries her sweet sensitive face shyly into me. We walk with other dogs and she likes being part of the group. She looks to people and other dogs she is familiar with for comfort and to gain confidence.

Medical History: My vet says she is healthy. She is microchipped, spayed, fully vaccinated and on monthly heartworm prevention. Her next leishmaniasis test will be due in December 2024.

Mavroula originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. She tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250 or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80.

Foster Comments: Marvoula gets nervous and afraid when there is too much chaos and noise. She is nervous around young children, so kids in the home should be at least 12 years old or older. I feel very strongly that she needs a quiet home with at least one other dog that she can continue to learn from. I have fallen in love with Mavroula and will be very sad to let her go.

Foster Location: Tucson, AZ

Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. If interstate transport is provided for your adopted dog, there will be an additional charge of $50.00 for the required Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (“Health Certificate”).  Typically, we are able to transport your adopted dog to within 2 hours of your home. *Dogs can be adopted outside the 1000-mile transport distance; however, adopters must be willing to either fly their adopted dog, drive to a location within the 1000-mile transport range, or make independent transport arrangements for their adopted dog. Transports to far Western states, from Eastern states, may have additional restrictions.

2. Vet references checked
3. Interview call

An applicant is not guaranteed the dog they apply for.
Applicants must complete the application process before speaking with foster homes.
We do NOT hold dogs for anyone. We have had people who were disappointed that they did not get the dog they initially applied for, but the ones who hung in there with us would not change a thing now that they have their A & B Dog.

Please Note:
1:You must be at least 21 years old to apply to adopt an A&B Setter.
2: Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
3: Proof of heartworm preventative and testing is REQUIRED (via vet records or receipts) for current dogs and recently passed dogs.
4: Signature is implied and assumed on e-mail & online Adoption Applications.

Above & Beyond English Setter Rescue's adoption fee is
$450.00 for puppies and dogs under one year.
$400.00 for dogs one up to three years
$350.00 for dogs three to six years
$250.00 for dogs seven to ten years
Reduced fee on a sliding scale for dogs 11 years and older.

We have made every attempt at keeping our adoption fee the lowest we could despite the rising costs associated with spaying and neutering, immunizations, and other related routine care. In most instances our adoption fee never comes close to the care associated before an adoption of one of our dogs takes place. We do feel however that our adoption fee is still less then if the adopter had to pay these expenses out of their pocket. In most cases volunteer transport is available for your adopted dog up to 1000 miles and within 2 hours of your home.

Mission Statement

Above and Beyond English Setter Rescue's goal is rescuing English Setters in need of new homes. While in our care the dogs will be vetted, spayed or neutered, and evaluated in foster homes, where they can learn love and stability and we can determine which type of home would work best for each dog.

Once adopted, Above and Beyond volunteers will be available for the dogs and adopters for each dog's life, with advice and support. Our mission is to put the dog's welfare above all else.

We are a non-profit, charitable 501(c)(3) organization. 100% of your donation goes to help English Setters in need and is tax deductible.
