My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Elfie was found as a stray, thin and lethargic with an extremely bad infection in both eyes. She was immediately taken to the vet for evaluation and treatment. Elfie was given antibiotics for her eye infections, but one of her eyes couldn’t be saved and was surgically removed. She has no sight in her remaining eye but may see some shadowing. After surgery, she went into heart failure and one of our hero vet techs brought her home for the night, not expecting her to survive. To everyone’s amazement, Elfie made a complete turn-around that night. What a fighter! She is an 8-year-old blind beauty, thriving in her foster home. Elfie is sweet, playful and gets along well with the resident dogs and cats.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

The first step in our process is to fill out our online application at our website, www.care4strays.org. Once received, it will be reviewed by one of our trained volunteers. If approved, we'll be in touch to arrange a "meet and greet" with the animal. All of our cats/dogs are in private foster homes.

Go meet their pets

Our animals are given wonderful care in private foster homes. In order to meet them, we require a completed application, which you can find at our website, www.care4strays.org.

Also, please check our website for adoption events.

More about this rescue

Since our founding in 1995 by Lynn Cancro, Caring About The Strays (C.A.T.S.), Inc. has worked to find “forever homes” for abandoned, unwanted, neglected, or abused companion animals.

All the animals in our care are in foster homes, which helps socialize the cat or dog and allows us to identify the best type of home for each animal to ensure a successful adoption. We also work to reduce the overpopulation of feral cats with our Trap-Neuter-Release program. In addition, our team also strives to educate the public about the importance of spaying or neutering their pets to decrease the number of unwanted pets.

C.A.T.S. is not a shelter in the traditional sense; we rely on private foster homes to house the many unwanted animals in our care.

Our Resale Shop (80 Kinderkamack Road in Westwood, NJ) helps fund our efforts. Please consider donating to our Resale Shop. Donations of brand-new and gently-used items are needed year-round and can be donated during shop hours Monday – Saturday 10:00 – 5:00.
