My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

Sissy is a sweet, gentle, and playful girl.  She enjoys exploring the outdoors and she loves to run and play with the other small dogs in her foster home!  A fenced in yard would be best for Sissy, allowing her to go in/out independently to do her business.  She enjoys going on walks and is learning to walk well on a leash.  Sissy travels quietly in the car.  She enjoys playing and chewing on toys, and she loves to collect them in her bed!

It will be important to have a confident small dog in Sissy’s forever home to help her continue to learn to trust people.  Sissy is cautious when meeting new people and it is important to let her settle in on her own timeline.  Despite her cautiousness, Sissy's not aggressive, she’s just timid when it comes to new human interaction. Sissy does enjoy a good rub when she trusts you.  Now that she trusts us, one of her favorite times of the day is when she’s allowed up on our bed in the morning with all our dogs where she can get lots of love and rubs, and cuddles in next to all of us. She will nudge your hand for more rubs!  With patience, time, and the influence of her small furry siblings, Sissy's confidence is growing daily.

Having a home where someone can be around more often would allow Sissy the time and exposure to her people for her to learn to trust them quicker.  In her present foster home, Sissy took a couple weeks to feel comfortable to allow her foster parents to give her rubs.  After a few weeks she started following us around the house, and after a month she started greeting us at the door when we came home.  She now will join me up on the couch for rubs and cuddle in next to me.  Her sweet playful side shines every day!  Sissy would be a wonderful companion for another small playful dog.  Sissy currently lives with small dogs and adults. Energetic large dogs and young children make her very nervous.  Older respectful teenage children may be okay, but young children scare her.  A larger dog that is low key and quiet may be okay with slow introductions.  A quieter household with not a lot of visitors would make Sissy most comfortable.

If you are looking for a playful companion for your small dog, and a girl who’s sweet, gentle, quiet, and even tempered then Sissy may be the girl for you.  Every day she shows us what a wonderful girl she is blossoming into!  It will be important to be patient with her to earn her trust, and to have a quieter home with no young kids, and no high energy large dogs.  Sissy would be fine hanging out in another room in the house with a “safe place” if young kids visited.  A fenced in yard would be the perfect home for Sissy.  Fill out an application, I’d love to tell you all about this sweet girl!

Sissy is from Texas.  If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is not a binding contract.

Go meet their pets

Ruff Start Rescue is a foster-based rescue, meaning no animals are available at the Princeton, MN office for public viewing or adoption. All animals in our care reside in foster homes with few special exceptions for our adoption center animals, who are housed at our partnering facilities temporarily before adoption. To meet a Ruff Starter you may be interested in adopting, please submit an adoption application on our website.

More about this rescue

Ruff Start Rescue is a foster-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit companion animal rescue that primarily serves communities throughout the state of Minnesota, as well as states in the south with severe pet overpopulation. We rescue stray, neglected, abandoned, and surrendered dogs and cats as well as ferrets, guinea pigs, rabbits, and other critters. Most of our work is accomplished by a complex network of volunteers, fosters, and supporters, all of whom come together to save thousands of animals each year.

Since our inception, we’ve firmly believed that a home is usually a far more desirable environment than a shelter or a kennel for most companion animals in need of a forever family. As a result, we rely nearly exclusively on volunteers to provide foster homes for rescued pets until they find their adoptive homes. Please note: this means no animals are available at our facility for public viewing.

Each pet in our care is provided with routine vaccinations, spay/neuter procedures, microchipped, given internal and external parasite preventatives, and tested for common bloodborne pathogens such as heartworm and feline leukemia. Advanced veterinary care is provided to any animal that requires such services before adoption.

If you are interested in fostering, adopting, or volunteering, please fill out an applicable application at our website: www.ruffstartrescue.org.
