My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

If you're working for home or just playing it safe by practicing social distancing, now is a perfect time to bring a new furry family member into the fold. Email us any questions about any cats we have and we will be happy to provide any additional information you may need. If you are approved for adoption, we are now doing curbside adoptions in order to minimize contact.

Rodger is about 3 years old as of February 2024.   Rodger was on our radar for a few weeks as we tried to confine him for a visible injury to his leg. Very street smart, he ignored all the attempts to lure him into a trap including sardines! Why would he? He was being fed at several homes each day; each one reporting that he was showing up very hungry! Smart boy! We were concerned when he disappeared during the arctic storm in January of 2024, nd relieved to find a caring community member had brought him into their home. He's been a tough one to agree to inside living, but he’s done it! He's sweet as can be, getting along with the other cats, and meek and mild! He tested positive for FIV, but that’s no reason for concern. He will lead a normal, healthy life and is not aggressive to the other cats. He’s very expressive and emotional! Rodger deserves safety, peace and love. He will need time and patience to adjust to his new home including a segregated area where he can learn to be brave and trust at his pace. Adopt him today!

Go meet their pets

Safe House is based in Bureau County, IL. Our pets live in foster homes so pets are shown by appointment only, but our volunteers will meet you any time of day or night to introduce you to the pet of your dreams. We also partner with our local Petsmart for adoption events.

More about this rescue

For the homeless, abused, or neglected animals of the Illinois Valley area, Safe House is a beacon of hope, a place for second chances, a warm spot to rest tired heads, to heal wounds and start anew.

Safe House Animal Rescue League is a 501(c)3 (nonprofit) organization run exclusively by dedicated volunteers. We are implementing innovative and progressive life-saving programs throughout central Illinois that pave the way for No-Kill communities where no pets are killed simply for being homeless.

We focus on rescuing pets who are at the greatest risk of being killed in shelters or animal control facilities and have saved hundreds of lives through our adoption programs. Safe House is a foster home based rescue where all of our pets live in home environments with real families until they are adopted. This prepares them for a successful transition to your home and allows us to know each pet as an individual.

Please get involved and help us save more lives – volunteer, foster, donate.
