My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

POE ~2-3 years old.  Good with most larger dogs. Not good with kids. Cats TBD. Fenced yard required.

GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only

Are you looking for an adventure partner? Are you looking for a four-legged companion to take hiking and running? Are you also looking for a furry friend that would be happy to lay on the couch with you and watch movies? Well, if that’s the case, look no further, Poe is your guy!

Poe is a very handsome Dutch Shepherd. He is about two years old, best guess, and weighs about 75 pounds. Poe has a beautiful brindle coat and soft eyes. Poe had a rough start to his life. It took him several months to get over the neglect he has suffered, but he has fully rebounded.

Poe is a working line dog! He is rather intense and is always looking for something to do. He is super smart and very eager to engage with his person. He has a lot of characteristics that are very common to the breed, so preference will be given to individuals with experience with such shepherds.

Poe is a “leaner” and a “hugger”. He will sit beside you and lean into you while looking up at you, and a lot of times, he will jump up and wrap his paws around you.

Poe is exceptionally food motivated. He trains easily, love’s challenges (like tracking scattered kibble), and will stay very focused on you when there are treats involved. He really wants to engage with his people. He loves to play fetch! You will need two tennis balls because you have to have one to throw in order yo get him to release the one he has.

Poe does very well with most dogs he meets. He gets along with both males and females. He can be a bit rough when playing, so he would probably do best with a medium or large dog friend. Cats are unknown, but he does have considerable prey drive so probably not a good candidate for a cat home.

Poe is a really fun boy and so deserving of a home where he will be the center of attention. He rides well in the car and is always eager to go on an adventure. He is a confident boy and does well in public.

If you think he might be the one for you, come and meet him soon. This fun and unique boy will not be in the rescue very long.

Go meet their pets

Once approved, we encourage applicants to visit adoption events to meet potential dogs that could be a match.
Before you fill out the application:
1). We do not adopt to individuals living outside of North Carolina, South Carolina, or Virginia.
2). If the only dog you are interested in has a (CL) after their name, this is a courtesy listing and we do not handle the adoptions of courtesy listings, please contact the person directly.

More about this rescue

Thank you for considering adopting a GSRA dog. We love that you are exploring rescuing a GSD. We firmly believe that the adoption of a dog is not one to be taken lightly. Because of this belief, our adoption process is what some would described as lengthy and can be emotional. If you are looking to take a dog home "tomorrow", unfortunately our organization is not for you.
