My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Socialization/training: Edith does not know any true commands, however she’s very quick to pick up on routines which is helpful with her being deaf. When meeting new people, including men and children, she is very sweet and does a tap dance. Edith will need to be the only pet in the home. She gets along with my senior lab most of the time but decides she doesn’t like her from time to time. I’ve never seen her around cats, but suspect her prey drive would kick in. She’s very trustworthy in the home, but will jump on furniture/windowsills with her front paws.

Crate trained: I’ve never had to put Edith in a crate. She can be trusted alone in the home for up to 9 hours.

Leash trained: Edith enjoys short, 10 minute walks before she gets tired and lays down. While walking she likes to take her time and enjoy the smells.

Activity Level: Edith has bursts of energy that last for a few minutes then she returns to sleeping. When outside, she’ll sniff around for a few minutes and ask to come back inside. She is fairly low energy and likes to find a quiet place to sleep.

Fence: I have a 6 foot fence, but a 4 foot fence would be fine. She is unable to jump fences and I haven’t seen her dig in the yard. If there is a hole big enough for her to escape, she will.

Behavior: Edith is a sweet, affectionate and loving little lady. She loves to be petted but isn’t much of a cuddler. She will lay for a few pets and will then find her own space. She’ll follow me around the house if she notices me moving. She likes to look out the window and will occasionally bark. She barks maybe once or twice a week.

Medical History: Edith is completely deaf, but it doesn’t impact her day-to-day. She has arthritis in her hind hips and neck and because of the arthritis in her neck, she can’t hold her head up. She had a tumor removed from her right front paw in November 2023. The doctor was able to remove 95% of the tumor and expect it to grow back very slowly. It is not the type of cancer to spread. She takes medications easily with food with a monthly cost of approximately $75.

Foster Comments: Edith came to me in June 2023. Since she’s been with me, she’s really come out of her shell and it’s amazing what a little love has done for her personality. She is a sweet, mellow girl and will need a home with no other dogs.

Foster Location: Liverpool, NY (Syracuse area)

Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. If interstate transport is provided for your adopted dog, there will be an additional charge of $50.00 for the required Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (“Health Certificate”).  Typically, we are able to transport your adopted dog to within 2 hours of your home. *Dogs can be adopted outside the 1000-mile transport distance; however, adopters must be willing to either fly their adopted dog, drive to a location within the 1000-mile transport range, or make independent transport arrangements for their adopted dog. Transports to far Western states, from Eastern states, may have additional restrictions.

An applicant is not guaranteed the dog they apply for.
Applicants must complete the application process before speaking with foster homes.
We do NOT hold dogs for anyone. We have had people who were disappointed that they did not get the dog they initially applied for, but the ones who hung in there with us would not change a thing now that they have their A & B Dog.

Please Note:
1:You must be at least 21 years old to apply to adopt an A&B Setter.
2: Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
3: Proof of heartworm preventative and testing is REQUIRED (via vet records or receipts) for current dogs and recently passed dogs.
4: Signature is implied and assumed on e-mail & online Adoption Applications.

Above & Beyond English Setter Rescue's adoption fee is
$450.00 for puppies and dogs under one year.
$400.00 for dogs one up to three years
$350.00 for dogs three to six years
$250.00 for dogs seven to ten years
Reduced fee on a sliding scale for dogs 11 years and older.

We have made every attempt at keeping our adoption fee the lowest we could despite the rising costs associated with spaying and neutering, immunizations, and other related routine care. In most instances our adoption fee never comes close to the care associated before an adoption of one of our dogs takes place. We do feel however that our adoption fee is still less then if the adopter had to pay these expenses out of their pocket. In most cases volunteer transport is available for your adopted dog up to 1000 miles and within 2 hours of your home.

Mission Statement

Above and Beyond English Setter Rescue's goal is rescuing English Setters in need of new homes. While in our care the dogs will be vetted, spayed or neutered, and evaluated in foster homes, where they can learn love and stability and we can determine which type of home would work best for each dog.

Once adopted, Above and Beyond volunteers will be available for the dogs and adopters for each dog's life, with advice and support. Our mission is to put the dog's welfare above all else.

We are a non-profit, charitable 501(c)(3) organization. 100% of your donation goes to help English Setters in need and is tax deductible.

For more information on our mission, or for assistance, please contact us.
