Loaf You know, I think my name is perfect for me. Cats average 12 to 16 hours of sleep daily; at 10 years of age, I am a serious napper. However, as a homeless stray, sleep had to wait since I had to spend time searching for food and shelter. I was found in Westfield in early March and brought to the HSHC. Frankly, I was feeling too crummy to demonstrate cooperative behaviors. Turns out I had filthy ears, a URI with congestion, eye inflammation, my mouth was bleeding due to gum disease, and I was FIV+! No wonder I was not a happy camper. FIV stands for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus and is a slowly developing virus that affects a cat's immune system over time. It CANNOT be spread casually through litterboxes, food and water dishes, or snuggling or playing. FIV+ cats can live with FIV- cats and not transmit the virus. So it's no biggie. First, I got all the medical and dental treatment I desperately needed. Cats usually have 30 teeth, and now I have about four! Then, I moved into a foster home with one of the staff, and my life did a 180-degree turnaround. My foster mom and dad really "get" cats. I spent three happy weeks there. At first, I was easily startled and hid at any noise. I gradually began to feel comfortable with lying near and observing them. I am all about dinnertime and would get very excited when food arrived! I have never been a pampered pet cat, so I'm still learning the ins and outs. My foster mom found a way to win my heart by brushing me with a soft brush. Oh, I love being brushed, so we did this every night! Pure bliss! I enjoy being petted, but the brush is MAGICAL! I even tried making friends with one of the resident cats, and I think I would enjoy living with friendly kitties. My foster mom was proud of my perfect use of the litterbox! I guess this is a big deal! The interviewer lady fell hard for me! When she fed me wet food from her hand, she giggled when I gave her toothless nibbles! Yep, I'm a charmer! I'd love to Loaf around with you! 5-9-24

With an open admission policy, a No-Kill philosophy, and more than 3,100 animals crossing our threshold each year, we have still maintained a 98% placement rate over the last 3 years.
This is an amazing feat for any organization…let alone one that takes in some of the most abused, injured and seriously ill animals imaginable.
