My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Looking for a handsome boy who's equal parts goofball and cuddlebug? Look no further! Oscar is here to steal your heart and your couch. Oscar's resume is as impressive as his wagging tail. At 3 years young and 60 pounds, he's got the looks and the smarts. He's already altered so he's ready to strut his stuff right into your home today!

With his inquisitive face and treat-loving attitude, Oscar is a pro at charming his way into your heart (and your treat jar). He's a quick learner too - sit? Nailed it. Leash skills? Work in progress, but he's getting there! He loves walks, is generally an easy walk, and is very responsive to his person. He passes other dogs quietly, just glancing at them. But wait, there's more! Oscar is a self-play champion, a master of the stuffie toss, and an expert at zoomies. Once he's done with his playtime, he transforms into the ultimate cuddle buddy, complete with the classic "paws on your lap" move.

Oscar enjoyed a long hike with a volunteer at Patapsco State Park. He loves exploring and he'd be a great adventure buddy. He also loves meeting people and getting pets. Oscar had a slumber party with a volunteer, and he had a blast. He was a well behaved passenger in the car. After his initial excitement to be out of the shelter (woo hoo!), he was able to get his silly puppy energy under control. He slept well overnight in a crate, with only a little bit of initial protest. After a day to familiarize with himself with the new house and routine, he was housebroken and following direction. He adored cuddles and attention. In the morning he laid under the table calmly while his new friend was having coffee. Oscar is exuberant both with playtime and with lovin', so we think he'd do best with older, sturdier children who are ready and willing to participate in his training. Do you want a puppy, but not all the work of housetraining and sharp puppy teeth? Oscar is your boy! He has a sweet playful innocence that is adorable. He loves loves loves his human's attention.

Oscar loves social time with other pups. He does best with gentle playmates and requests to meet any doggie roommates to make sure they are a good match.

Don't miss out on the chance to adopt Oscar and add a whole lot of wag to your life! Come meet him today and get ready for a lifetime of love, laughter, and happiness! Adopt Oscar - because every home needs a little more tail wagging!

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

BARCS takes in new animals in need of a loving home every day. The pictures above only represent a portion of the animals that are available for adoption at any given time. Some animals get adopted immediately and their photos never make it onto our website—which is wonderful! If you don’t see what you are looking for, please visit our shelter to meet your perfect match today! Adoption fees are $75; however, we offer several adoption packages listed here. Our adoption hours are Monday-Friday from 2-6 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

Adoption application

Go meet their pets

Step 1: Check out the adoptable cats, dogs and small companion animals listed on our website. Animals with a blue “I’m in Foster” banner are not currently in our shelter. Check www.barcs.org for our adoption process for animals in foster homes.

Step 2: Visit our shelter during adoption hours (Monday-Friday 2-6 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday 11 a.m.-4 p.m.). When you arrive, you will first be asked to fill out our Shelter Adoption Application with your information. You may also pre-fill our Shelter Adoption Application ahead of time online to save time when you are at the shelter. Your application will be processed after you meet the animal.

Step 3: Tour our adoption rooms and write down the names of animals that you would like to meet. A volunteer or staff member will help you meet your chosen animals to make a match!

Step 4: When you have selected the right animal for you, our Adoptions Team will run your Adoption Application for approval. Once your application is approved, you will participate in an adoption class where you will learn all of the details about your new adopted family member, including their known history and medical records.

What else to expect: Animals who are already spayed/neutered and past their stray hold (if applicable) can often go home with you the same day. Pick-up arrangements for unaltered animals and/or animals still on a stray hold will be made during your adoption class.

More about this shelter

BARCS is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization operating Maryland’s largest animal shelter and pet adoption center. We are an open admission shelter, granting refuge to every abandoned, neglected, abused, lost or surrendered animal that comes through our door. A staggering 30 or more animals are surrendered to BARCS every day. No matter what the circumstance, we do not turn away any animal in need of shelter, food, medical care and a loving touch. Yearly, this equates to more than 12,000 dogs, cats, kittens, puppies, and even wildlife and exotic animals that need care and placement.
