At 5 months old and with horrible skin, Kenai found himself on the euthanasia list in TX in November of 2023. After a month of being cared for in TX, he arrived in Colorado where he was fostered.
Here is what his foster had to say:
Where do I start? Sit down for this novel!
Background:
What happened to Kenai is unknown. We do not know why he had no hair. He did not have mange. We can assume he was a street dog who had to fend for himself and for food at only 5 months old. We do know that he did not deserve this life.
Arriving in CO:
Kenai required medicated baths every 5 days. We would rub coconut oil on his skin and let it sit for an hour before bathtime. He did so good! He also let me trim his nails without a problem. He was given nutritious food topped with fish oil to help his skin. His hair is still growing in and I can see that he is going to be so handsome once it is all in!
Kenai with other dogs:
Kenai was fostered with 4 dogs. One female and 3 males, ages 4-9. At first, Kenai seemed to want to play with his foster siblings. However, they did not want to play with him so they all kept to themselves. His foster siblings take time to warm up to new fosters so this is not uncommon.
Kenai and one male foster sibling had a love hate relationship and would sometimes get into scuffles. We also believe that his other foster brother who is 75 lbs was a bit too much for Kenai as his foster brother can be "in your face". Kenai and the other 2, more confident dogs, did not interact much.
In TX, he got along with his 3 foster siblings and would play with one of them.
* We believe Kenai may do best in a home with a confident and not mean, dog sibling or, by himself.
Kenai and kids:
He was fostered with an 11 year old and a 14yr old. There were no problems with Kenai and the kids.
*Kids in the household should respect him and should be older. A home with no kids may be ideal.
Day to day:
Kenai quickly learned the dog door and never had an accident in the house. We also made sure he went out multiple times a day. When we would leave, we would put Kenai in a XL crate. Kenai did not like the crate and would try to escape and would bark. He would sleep by my bed at night in the crate and for the first month, would whine to be let out to use the bathroom. During the second month, he no longer whined to be let out. As a precaution, I would feed him separate from my dogs using a slow feeder bowl. I taught him sit, shake, stay, and free. He picked up on commands quickly. He is very smart. He gets very excited for food and treats and will jump up on you. We were working on stopping that behavior. He does pretty good walking on a leash. Kenai liked taking naps with me and laying on the couch while I watched T.V. He was my shadow and would follow me everywhere. He likes squeaky balls and rubbery toys. He really likes treat puzzles.
Kenai has alot to learn and will need a patient adopter who will work with him. He is a precious soul and deserves the very best life has to offer. Will you be the one to give him a chance?
