My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

SITKA NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!!

Name:   Sitka       Best Guess for Breed:   Husky

Best Guess for Age:  2 years as of March 2024        SEX:    male

Approximate Weight:   56lbs

Gets Along With:   Other dogs! We have not seen Sitka with children but he can be tested. Sitka is not recommended for a home with cats due to his breed.

Currently Living at:   South Carolina shelter - Sitka needs a foster home to make his way to DC!

Special adoption considerations: Sitka is heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky!  They are part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs.  All dogs in the study will be placed at random, in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, this pup will be eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care.  Post treatment, we will work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test 6 months after treatment concludes, followed by a second test at 9 months.

Sitka is Looking For: The most important thing you need to know is that adopting Sitka for his looks alone is a bad idea. Huskies are smart and need plenty of mental and physical enrichment - they were bred for all-day activity! If you don't provide them with that enrichment, they WILL make their own in the home and you'll be doing repairs or replacing items. But if you get their needs and meet them, oh, they are just awesome, amazing dogs full of personality.

Sitka is gonna be such a fun companion. He's offering lots of laughs and opportunities for you to stay active in exchange for a home with central air conditioning and humans who appreciate his smarts and keep him challenged. What do you say? Is he the boy you want by your side for all those miles you have to cover before you sleep?

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

The adoption process begins when you submit an adoption application either online or at an adoption event. The individual responsible for the dog you are interested in adopting - a position we call the “adoption coordinator” - will then set up a time to discuss your application over the telephone. The adoption coordinator will check your vet reference to make sure all current and past pets were kept up-to-date with their shots and medical care. The adoption coordinator will also set up a home visit with one of our trained volunteers. That individual will come to your home to ensure that it is a safe environment, to confirm that everyone in the home is on board with adopting a dog, and to discuss any other questions you may have about dog adoption!

Our adoption events are held each weekend. A schedule of times and locations can be found at www.luckydoganimalrescue.org.
