My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

Meet Mackenzie (pictured first) & Abby Rose (pictured second) - our newest bonded pair at Safe Haven! They came to us as their previous owner needed to move to a care center and could not take them with. Abby Rose & Mackenzie have lived together most all of their lives, so they have become very bonded to one another and dependent upon one another. Although a huge transition took place in their lives coming from a home which they lived in for many years and moving into the shelter environment - these girls have learned to LOVE all of the attention, warm laps to sit on, stroller rides around the shelter and outside (on the warmer days!), and have settled in quite well.

Upon their arrival at Safe Haven, they were both brought up-to-date on their veterinary work by our veterinarian. An examination took place as they both had not been seen by a vet for a few years due to their owner's declining health. A senior blood work panel was taken from both girls to determine their state of health. We were pleased to have their blood panels results check out well - for their age. Abby Rose has a grade 4 heart murmur, she has been started on medication for this. The medication is relatively inexpensive and it helps her heart from overworking itself. She has been doing well with this medication. It was brought to our attention that Abby Rose was not spayed upon her arrival - after receiving several medical professionals opinions on this procedure for Abby Rose, it was decided to proceed with the needed spay surgery. We are very forunate this surgery took place as Abby Rose had the beginning of pyometra (infection of the uterus), which can sometimes be fatal if left untreated. Abby Rose has recovered well after her surgery day (she also had some dental cleaning done), and is loving her time spent snuggled up with her life-long companion 'sister'. Mackenzie had been spayed a few years ago due to the same condition (pyometra), so we are happy to say both girls won't have to worry about that ever again! It is noticeable in the pictures that Mackenzie is blind. She has been blind for a few years now, and gets around well with her nose and with the help of her guiding partner, Abby Rose. Not being able to see does not slow this little gal down - she does quite well finding her way around and adjusting to change, with time.

Abby Rose & Mackenzie were not used to going outside for walks nor potty time. Their previous owner left potty pads out for them to use - we have done the same with them while they've been at Safe Haven, and both girls do relatively well with utilizing the pee pads. They do enjoy getting fresh air and snuffling around in the grass, but their tendency has been to utilize pee pads as that is what they have been used to most of their lives. Any future adopter(s) should expect to keep potty pads out for their use to help with comfortability and familiarity. With that being said, considering they are both senior-aged pups, their future adopter(s) should be able and ready to take on any further medical cases that may arise with these girls. They do request a warm bed to cuddle up in - maybe a warm lap too?! :) A quiet home where their 'person/people' are around often would be great for these two as they transition back into a home setting - they truly enjoy every bit of human interaction and company they can get.

If you are interested in meeting Abby Rose & Mackenzie, please complete an online adoption application found on our website at www.wesavepets.com. Once the online application has been completed, a Safe Haven volunteer will be in contact to discuss the next steps.

Additional adoption info

It is the policy of Safe Haven of Iowa County that all animals adopted from our facility will be spayed or neutered upon adoption, or the adopter will sign a spay/neuter agreement and follow up with veterinary records once the operation has been complete for puppies and kittens. We firmly believe that controlling the animal population is the only way to reduce the population of animals in rescue facilities such as ours and those shelters that do destroy animals for no reason other than overpopulation.

It is our policy that adoptions are conducted a minimum of 24 hours after your initial visit with the animal and submission of the adoption application. This allows us time to call your references, perform home inspection as well as giving you the opportunity to sleep on your decision and make sure it is what you really want.

Compare the adoption fees below with the routine animal health care and spay / neuter costs you would have to pay. Without the generous help of the local veterinarians we would never be able to include such services at this fee.

We have the right to refuse ANY adoption for ANY reason.

Dogs & Puppies: Adoption fees include spaying or neutering (if under 4 months a voucher is provided for surgery at one of our participating veterinarians), heartworm test, distemper, rabies, worming, ear cleaning, flea control if needed.

Fee: $200.00

Cats & Kittens: Adoption fees include spaying or neutering (if under 4 months a voucher is provided for surgery at one of our participating veterinarians), FeLv and FIV testing, distemper, rabies and worming, ear cleaning, and flea control if needed.

Fee: $50.00

All puppies and kittens adopted without spay/neuter completed will have a contract stating the animals will be altered by the time it is 6 months old. Follow up calls will be made to confirm completion of surgery.

More about this rescue

Our Mission
Safe Haven of Iowa County is a rescue organization whose mission is to rescue, protect, spay/neuter and find good homes for stray animals in Iowa County, Iowa. We strive to offer the best in traditional veterinary care with relationships built with local veternarians and, whenever possible, holistic health care for sick and injured animals in our care.
While sheltering homeless pets is vitally important, Safe Haven of Iowa County also understands that pet shelters are not a solution to the nations overpopulation problem. It is essential that we:

-Teach respect for living things

-Reinforce the bond between humans and animals

-advocate for and help provide assistance to large scale spay and nuetering programs

-Teach and model responsible pet ownership

These are all things that will help us in our effort to stop the needless killing of cats and dogs in our shelters and pounds.

We ask that our community understand that while we pamper and care for our pets they are all still missing the most important thing in their life...a loving home and family of thier own.
