My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi I'm Gandolf! I'm a big goofy guy who doesn't know my own size. I am happy go lucky and love to have fun. I really enjoy playing with other dogs. However my play style is rough and tumble therefore I shouldn't go to a home with small dogs. I get excited when I meet new people and I can get a little mouthy and sometimes my size can knock small children over. It is recommended I am not placed with small children for those reasons. When I lived with my foster mom I got to run all around her farm. That was really cool for a curious young guy like me! I met all sorts of small animals on the farm and did really well with them. I liked to give the goats kisses however I'm not too sure they felt the same. My foster mom was great and work on my listening skills with me. I have a fairly good recall, every time she would call me I would happily come running! If I sound like a great fit for your family please don't wait to come see me! I promise I'm all that and more.

Here’s what to expect when you arrive at TAILS:

A staff member will ask you what sort of pet you are looking for and then will provide you with information about specific pets that appear to be a good fit for your family, taking into consideration such factors as: kids, level of activity, your pet experience, other animals currently in the home, etc. You will be encouraged to interact with the pet or pets of your choice in a private visiting room. We believe that bringing a new pet into your home is an important decision so you’ll have plenty of time to make your decision without feeling rushed. Staff and volunteers will be available throughout this time to answer any questions you may have. Once you’ve made your choice, an adoption counselor will review the adoption contract with you.

You’ll pay the adoption fee. Then you’ll take your new family member home with you!

An animal can be put on hold in person at the TAILS facility during regular adoption hours.

Our mission: Saving the lives of companion animals through rescue, adoption and spay/neuter; advocating for pets in our region.

TAILS Humane Society is a limited admission animal shelter providing a safe haven for almost 2,400 animals each year. We are committed to providing each animal the time and medical care they need to have their best chance at adoption.

TAILS was established in 1999 by a group of local animal advocates dedicated to bringing a comprehensive animal shelter to DeKalb. We operated out of an old farmhouse until 2005 when we cut the ribbon on our Barber Greene facility. In 2009, we opened our low cost Spay/Neuter Clinic providing quality, affordable sterilization services to the public. We continue to grow and strengthen our programs and service as we continue to save lives.
