My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Mr. Max needs a new foster, foster to adopt or adopter ASAP! His foster is travelling and cannot fit Max with her 2 dogs. Mr. Max is a GORGEOUS 8 yr old, Australian Shepherd or possibly an Australian Shepherd/Golden Retriever mix. Mr. Max came to ASF after his owner passed away and the family could not care for him due to health issues. Max lived in his home alone for approx. 1 month being checked on daily. We have no idea if Max witnessed his owner's passing. Mr. Max is good with other dogs and after a few weeks in foster is finally playing with the foster's 1 dog, although the other is not a fan of Mr. Max. He is utd on vaccines, on preventatives, microchipped and was neutered (in the last few weeks. The best foster or adopter for Mr. Max will be someone who can continue his training. Someone with patience that believes an old dog can learn new tricks! Mr. Max is a strong leash puller and is reactive (not aggressive) in the yard and on leash to other dogs and people. He is mistrusting of new people until he has a chance to settle down and meet them on his terms. We do not know if he was just sheltered or if this is trauma from his owner's passing. Max is also quite vocal, so a home in the country or with some property and no close neighbors would be ideal. However, he is improving and lessening his barking. Mr. Max is also in the process of crate training and is getting better every day. When Max first came into ASF he was intact and marking in the home. That has ceased with his neuter, but he may try it in a new home at first. It's nothing belly bands can't handle until he is comfortable. Mr. Max has not been exposed to cats or children. Max would be good alone or with another dog. He is a good boy at the vet, but nervous in the car so he needs to be crated or tethered. Max's ideal home, foster or adopter, will have a fenced yard and the time and patience to continue his training. This senior boy still has years of love to give!! Will you be Mr. Max's forever? Here is the application: https://www.australianshepherdsfurever.org/adoption-application There is an additional $20 microchip fee which includes registration and transfer to his new furever family. All adoption fees are used for future rescue efforts.

More about this rescue

Nancy Pearlman-Gonzalez, Founder and CEO, created Australian Shepherds Furever (ASF), a non-profit organization to promote the education, rescue, fostering and adoption of the Australian Shepherd breed of dog.
In July 2012, Australian Shepherds Furever (ASF) initiated as a page on Facebook. Hoping to have 1,000 members at the end one year, ASF quickly grew into a network of more than 98,000 dedicated individuals striving to provide aid and refuge to Aussies all over the country.
From these phenomena, the website www.australianshepherdsfurever.org was developed to educate the public on this intelligent and beautiful breed, and provide resources to those seeking help or willing to contribute to the Adopt, Save and Foster (ASF) philosophy. ASF filed for non- profit status in July 2013 and obtained its status in July 2014 and through proactive networking, partnerships, training/rehabilitation and fundraising, ASF has saved the lives of countless dogs to include those with Parvo, Mange, Tick Disease, Cancer, Pneumonia, broken limbs and some of the most extreme cases of abuse that one could imagine. ASF focuses on the Aussies that most would turn their backs on. ASF is in its 5th year and over 1,910 Australian Shepherds have been rescued from high kills shelters, abusive owners and other high-risk situations.
We, as humans, have a responsibility to uphold, shelter and care for those beings that are less fortunate, that are simply cast away. Thanks to proactive individuals who work collectively, Aussies nationwide are being given a chance at a better life through Australian Shepherds Volunteers are an integral component of ASF for the maintenance of the website, screening potential fosters and adopters, providing training, fundraising, data base management, networking and transporting of recued Aussies. All Volunteers; Adopters, Fosters, Trainers and Transporters etc. are carefully screened and vetted to assure the safe and vital placement of these dogs into furever homes. We currently have over 170 foster families and over 160 dogs in foster care nationwide. We have professional trainers to work with our dogs with severe behavioral issues. We also have a team of Rescue Coordinators, Medical Advisors, Fundraisers, Regional Reps, Application Processors, Data Base Managers, Social Media Managers, Microchip and ID tag Registrars and Ground and Air Transport Coordinators that work together to save these beautiful dogs.
Furever (ASF).
